New Audi A1
This is one of the most long awaited new models in Audi’s history – finally a compact premium rival to the BMW Mini. The world car marketplace has changed, with plenty of people downsizing to get themselves cars that are more fuel efficient, more economical to run, easy to manoeuvre and park in city traffic, and yet not cheap or budget cars, and that retain all the style and luxury that they have become accustomed to in their larger cars. Thus the premium compact car segment was created, and the New Audi A1 is set to lead the way. The car is only available as a 3 door at launch in late 2010 but a 5 door version should be available in 2011 likely to be called A1 sportback.
Specification
The specification of the new Audi A1 is one of its key selling points – no need to sacrifice luxury just to get yourself a smaller car, and in this respect the A1 retains all the features and style you would expect to find in larger models. It comes in a range of engine sizes – with a choice of 1.2 TFSI and 1.4 TFSI petrol engines, both small capacity turbo units, so just because you see 1.2 don’t expect it to be either slow or underpowered – a 1.2 turbo has as much go as a standard 1.6 litre would have – it has 86 horsepower and a top speed of 112 mph, but uses much less fuel and has lower emissions, so cheaper road tax.
The 1.4 TFSI uses the same engine as the one available in the A3, with 122 horsepower, and in a car the size of the A1 this is pretty fast with 122 horsepower, but with CO2 emissions of just 126 g/km and a combined fuel economy of 52.3 miles per gallon it sips fuel like most diesels do. The diesel engine in the range is even better with 105 horsepower, and a 0 to 60 time of 10 seconds, but with a stunning 70.6 mpg average fuel economy and a CO2 rating of just 105 g/km it is the one to go for if you are looking for low running costs.
Audi A1 SE
The new Audi A1 SE specification is the “entry” level at the time of launch, and is as well equipped as any of the Larger Audi models. SE spec gets you as standard: Automatic Start Stop technology, 15” alloy wheels, tyre repair kit, 6.5 inch display screen, and Aux-In socket to connect your mp3 player, a single CD player with 6 speakers, easy entry front seats and split fold rear seats, plenty of airbags, front passenger airbag deactivation, isofix child seats, first aid kit, thatcham category 1 alarm immobiliser, remote central locking, tool kit, warning triangle, electric body coloured door mirrors, sports steering wheel adjustable for height and reach, electric front windows, front floor mats, and the all important air conditioning.
Audi A1 Sport
The new Audi A1 Sport is the next step up from the SE, and currently cost £1800 for the upgrade. The Sport and gets everything the SE gets and also includes: larger 16” alloy wheels, sports suspension with stiffer springs – although you can downgrade back to the softer SE suspension if you prefer for no extra charge. Bluetooth mobile phone integration is included, and voice control, there are also sports front seats with lumbar adjustment, front fog lights, a multi function leather steering wheel with aluminium inlay, drivers information system aluminium trim and a leather handbrake grip and gear-knob.
Audi A1 S Line
The new Audi A1 S-Line is the top of the range trim and adds another £1515 on top of the sport price (which is already £1800 more than the SE) and for the extra money you get: 17 inch alloy wheels, S Line sports suspension, half leather ‘sprint’ upholstered seats, s line badges all over the car, the s line body kit, which gives a deeper sports front and rear bumper, side skirts, rear roof spoiler, black cloth headlining, aluminium inlays in the door sills, and an LED interior lights package. The Xenon plus headlight package is an optional extra even on the s line models.
