New Audi A4

The New Audi A4 has just been launched, and while it looks similar to previous generations, it is a new car from the ground up. With the familiar Audi group styling but with some subtle curves introduced. The car is the UK leader in the executive category, competing with both the 3 Series BMW and the Mercedes C-Class. The traditional Audi strengths remain, with refined looks, great build quality and interiors that beat anything else other manufacturers can offer. 1.8 TFSI

The 1.8 is the entry into the A4 range and comes in either a standard 120 bhp format with 0-60 in 10.5 seconds, or the more powerful 160 bhp. It gives a 0-60 time of 8.6 seconds and both variants give fuel consumption figures averaging around the 40 mpg mark. The 120 bhp version can feel a little sluggish, but the 160 bhp has plenty of go. the 120 is available in all 3 trim levels with the 160 in SE or S-Line trim only. Automatic transmission (Multitronic in brand speak) is available on the 120 but not the 160. It is available in saloon and Avant estate body styles.

2.0 TFSI

The 2.0 TFSI runs with a powerful 2.0 turbocharged 211 bhp engine developed from the unit found in the Golf GTI and re tuned for this application. It is a particularly strong motor that gives a 0-60 time of 6.9 seconds, and on to a limited top speed of 155 mph. Fuel economy doesn’t suffer unless you are really pushing it, with a combined average figure of 42.8 mpg. It is available in saloon and Avant estate body styles.

2.0 TDI

The 2.0 TDI diesel is the mainstay of the A4 range and easily the biggest seller. Replacing the old 1.9 TDI engine with a much newer Common Rail design that is more powerful, more refined and much quieter than the old unit. It comes in 3 power levels – the standard 120 bhp engine, a 143 bhp unit that is more than enough for everyday use, and a 170 bhp version that really goes when you floor it. The 120 and 140 bhp version are front wheel drive only , and the 170 can be had with the quattro drive system if you want to pay the extra. confusingly, only the 143 bhp variant can be specced as Automatic, the 170 is manual only. It is available in saloon and Avant estate body styles.

“2.7 TDI”

The 2.7 TDI diesel is a 190 bhp engine with a lazy torque curve ideal for cruising without needing to rev the car. It’s available in automatic transmission only, which suits the nature of the car as the engine can become a little coarse when revved hard. The car still gives mid 40’s mpg, but if you’re looking for a performance diesel the 3.0 is the better bet. It is available in saloon and Avant estate body styles.

3.0 TDI

The 3.0 TDI diesel gives real performance in the new A4 with 240 bhp, 0-60 in around 6 seconds and has a top speed limited to 155 mph, all while giving nearly 43 mpg. It’s not a cheap car but does come with the Quattro 4 wheel drive system as standard, and can be had in either manual or Automatic and is available in saloon and Avant estate body styles.

Audi A4 Specification

The A4 has a decent level of standard equipment, although there is also a huge capacity for customisation from a massive options list and also the ‘exclusive’ range of individual leathers and paint finishes. Standard equipment includes: 16” alloy wheels, CD player, split fold rear seats, fog lights, alarm/immobiliser, climate control, carpet mats and electric windows.

Audi A4 SE

The A4 SE is the mid range trim, and gets: 17” Alloys, CD player with Aux-in socket for your MP3 player, 10 speaker sound system, multi-function steering wheel, auto dimming mirror, Aluminium dash inlays, 3 zone climate control, driver information system, automatic headlights and rain sensing wipers. The SE trim is the most popular seller and costs £1000 more than the standard trim, however if you prefer your car to look a little more sporty, you may consider the S Line.

Audi A4 S Line

The Audi A4 S Line trim is a not inconsiderable £2500 more than the SE trim, and gives you an even larger set of 18” low profile alloys, sports suspension which is 20mm lower than standard, space saver spare wheel, brushed Aluminium inlays, Sports seats, Xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, and the full S Line styling pack which includes a deeper more aggressive front bumper, a rear diffuser, side skirts and a rear spoiler on the Avant models.

Audi A4 Avant

The Audi A4 Avant (or Estate to you and me) has been the top selling estate in the class for a long time, partly down to its sheer practicality, but also because it is one of the best looking estate cars on the market today. The load bay isn’t massive with the seats up, take a look at the A6 Avant if that’s what you’re after, but the Avant does such a good job of carting round whatever you need whilst still retaining its classy executive looks that it’s a great combination of style and practicality. Pretty much every engine and trim level that the saloon has available is also present in the Avant version, with the cost for the estate being just over £1150.
