The New Audi A8 2012 model is the newly for sale range topping flagship, and the largest of Audi’s luxury cars. Built with an advanced all aluminium construction, it is incredibly light compared to its rivals from BMW and Mercedes, meaning much better fuel consumption, along with improved acceleration, braking and cornering. 2 other advantages of the aluminium are no rust, and a much better resistance to small dents that you inevitably pick up in car parks etc. The A8 handles beautifully for such a large car, taking corners with aplomb. Internally the finish is wonderful, with Audi renowned for its beautiful interiors. Head and legroom are both first rate, and there’s an option of a long wheelbase version should you require an extra six inches or so of legroom in the back – ideal for chauffeuring. The market for large luxury cars like the A8 has dropped in the UK with people diversifying into 4×4’s and sports cars, but for those who truly understand the benefits of these cars, there is nothing better to be wafted around in.

Audi A8 3.0 TFSI Petrol

The 3.0 TFSI is the smaller of the 2 petrol engines available in the A8 range, and in the UK it’s sales will no doubt be small compared to the diesel versions but the engine itself is a good unit, with 290 horsepower and a 0-60 time of 6.1 seconds. The 2 points where the petrol unit loses out to the diesel are the traditional ones: fuel economy, which is 31 mpg and CO2 levels which are 213 g/km.

Audi A8 3.0 TDI Diesel

The 3.0 TDI diesel gives real performance in the new A8 with 250 bhp, and a good shove in the back from the mid range torque. propelling it from 0-60 in 6.1 seconds – an identical time to the 3.0 petrol model, and has a top speed restricted to 155 mph, all while giving an average 42 mpg fuel economy.

Audi A8 4.2 FSI

The 4.2 FSI petrol is a rare beast in the UK – a big V8 non turbo engine, with 372 horsepower. Fuel economy isn’t much worse than the 3.0 petrol version, and CO2 levels are at 219 g/km. unless you’re a real diesel phobic, you’re more likely to be going for the TDi engines instead though, and residuals on the 4.2 V8 petrol aren’t great compared to the rest of the A8 range.

Audi A8 4.2 TDI Diesel

The 4.2 diesel is a popular choice in Germany for the A8, but the majority of the diesel sales in the UK are the 3.0 due to increased economy, which is a pity as the 4.2 TDI has huge reserves of mid range thrust from it’s 350 horsepower engine, meaning in real world driving conditions overtaking happens in the blink of an eye without much in the way of change down from the smooth auto gearbox. 0-60 times are at the 5.5 second mark, which is quicker than the 4.2 petrol, and top speed is again limited to 155. Official fuel economy figures aren’t bad at all for such a big engine at the 37 mpg mark, due largely to the aluminium body keeping weight down.

Audi A8 Specification

As you would expect being a top of the range luxury car, the Audi A8 2012 spec comes with a very good level of standard equipment. With no ‘basic’ spec, the SE is the entry into the range, and will be the best seller. There are only 2 trim levels, the SE or Executive SE, and for most the standard car will more than suffice, with the executive costing about £2600 more. A Long wheelbase version is also available in either specification level.
