Specification

The 1.4 VTi petrol engine is the entry level engine in the range giving 95 horsepower, and a 0-60 time of a creditable 10.6 seconds, and top speed at a more motorway worthy 114 mph. Fuel economy actually beats the 1.1 litre engine too, at 48.7 mpg and CO2 levels are also lower than the 1.1 at 134 g/km.

The new 1.6 diesel is just shy of the petrol’s power level, having 90 horsepower and a 0-60 time of 11.3 seconds, a top speed of 112 mph and a combined fuel economy of 70.6 mpg. There is also an option with this engine to pay a little more to get an even greener version with 99 g/km so if you’re frequently entering London and want to avoid the congestion charge then this is the one to go for.

The 1.6 petrol engine is available as either a normally aspirated engine known as the VTi with 120 horsepower or with a turbo fitted with 150 horsepower, which makes the car usefully quick, giving a 0-60 time of 8.9 seconds, or 7.3 seconds in the turbo. Fuel economy drops slightly from 47 mpg in the standard engine to 42mpg in the turbo, but the turbo is the most fun if you can afford the extra.
