Ford C-Max 2012

The new 1.6 petrol engine is the cheapest model in the range and is available in manual transmission only in either Style or Zetec trim levels. The engine is fun to rev and spritely enough, with 100 horsepower, a 0 to 60 time of 12.9 seconds, a top speed of 109 mph and a reasonable fuel economy figure of 40.9 miles per gallon on average. CO2 levels are middling at 164 g/km. Prices start from just under the £17,000 mark but most generally look at the diesel model instead if they can afford it, despite the good deals we can offer.

The 1.6 TDCi is the most popular seller in the CMax range, as the majority of buyers look for Diesel models when searching for people carriers as economy takes priority over performance. The 1.6 TDCi gives a 0-60 time of 11.3 seconds, with 110 horsepower, a top speed of 115 mph and fuel economy figure of 62.8 mpg. The 1.8 Petrol is a willing engine giving 125 horsepower, and like most engines in the range is fun to rev. 0 to 60 is dispatched in 10.8 seconds, and top speed is 121 mph. Fuel economy is similar to the 1.6 petrol engine at 39.8 miles per gallon, and CO2 is 169g/km.

The 2.0 Auto is the only petrol model in the range to get an automatic gearbox, in fact the 2.0 petrol is only available in an auto. It has 145 horsepower, but the auto gearbox blunts the acceleration to 11.2 seconds 0 to 60, with a top speed of 119 mph. The 2.0 TDCi diesel is the top of the range and the most expensive, but is also one of the best to use. It is only available in the Zetec or Titanium specification, and comes either as a manual or a powershift automatic gearbox. It has a 0-60 time of 9.6 seconds, with 136 horsepower and a top speed of 124 mph. Fuel consumption is still better than any of the petrol models at 48.7 miles per gallon. CO2 is at the 149 g/km mark.
