It’s always been at the top of the list, but the New Ford Fiesta is the new best selling car in the super mini class, and the top selling new car in the UK, and for a very good reason – it’s fantastic! Available as a 3 door or as a 5 door, the Fiesta has dynamic good looks that are so good they are set to be copied across the rest of the range, along with a selection of good engines and crisp handling, all with the reassurance of the Ford brand behind them. Specification

The new 1.25 litre petrol engine is the smallest and has the lowest prices in the range, but has a good deal of zing about it. There are 2 versions available, a 60 and an 82 horsepower variant, both are keen to rev, and the 82 horsepower model is particularly peppy. The 60 bhp model has a 0 to 60 time of 16.9 seconds and a top speed of 94 mph, but gives a good fuel economy figure of 51.4 miles per gallon, and CO2 at 127 g/km. the 82 bhp model has a much improved 0-60 time of 13.3 seconds and a top speed of 104 mph, while fuel economy barely suffers at 49.6 mpg and CO2 rises a very small amount to 133 g/km.

The 1.4 is the only petrol engine in the range to also be available with an automatic gearbox, adding just under £1000 to the price. It has 96 horsepower, with a 0-60 time of 12.2 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 109 mph, meaning plenty of real world performance for most people. The fuel economy figure pretty much matches that of the 1.25 model at 49.5 mpg, and CO2 is almost identical at 133 g/km.

The new Fiesta 1.4 TDCi Diesel is the smaller of 2 diesel engines on offer, but still manages a very decent performance, giving 68 horsepower and a 0 to 60 time of 14.9 seconds and a top speed just a shade over 100 mph. This is backed by some great fuel consumption figures – 67.3 mpg is amazing and the CO2 figure of only 110 g/km is pretty startling as well. This is definitely the Fiesta to buy if you are looking for cheap prices on your monthly motoring. Ford does not yet offer an Econetic version of the 1.4 TDCi diesel, but we expect one in the future.

The new 1.6 petrol is the largest petrol variant in the range and is only available in the higher specification Titanium and Zetec S models. It has 120 horsepower giving a 0-60 time of 9.9 seconds and a top speed of 120 mph, which makes this the fastest Fiesta available until an ST or RS version is launched, buy Ford has denied it will make one of these. Fuel economy is still rather good at 47.9 miles per gallon, and CO2 is similarly low at 139 g/km, meaning other than the higher list price, there is very little reason not to go for the 1.6 larger engine size. Strangely enough it is not available with an auto transmission, being manual only.

The Fiesta 1.6 TDCi diesel is the pick of the range if you can afford it! With 90 horsepower it gives a 0-60 time of 11.9 seconds but feels a lot brisker, and has all the in gear torque you need for effortless acceleration on the motorway, combined with a top speed of 109 mph. Fuel consumption is fantastic at 67.2 mpg and CO2 is equally impressive at 110g/km making this Fiesta a really cheap car to buy and run.

Ford Fiesta Econetic

The Fiesta Econetic diesel is based on the 1.6 TDCi above but tweaks the car for optimal fuel efficiency (as if 67 mpg isn’t good enough!) buy remapping the throttle, some subtle aerodynamic modifications and some slightly higher gear ratios Ford is able to squeeze an amazing average fuel economy figure of 76.3 mpg out of the diesel Econetic, and lowering the CO2 to just 98 g/km, meaning no road tax or congestion charge. Ford Fiesta Studio

The Studio is the entry level specification in the range and comes with: Radio / CD payer with 2 speakers, power socket, split folding rear seats, Anti lock brakes, driver, passenger and side airbags, Isofix rear seat mountings, colour coded bumpers, remote central locking, and 14” steel wheels.
