Ford Focus 2012

The new 1.6 litre petrol engine is the smallest and has the lowest prices in the range, but has a good deal of zing about it. The 1.6 petrol engine gives a thoroughly decent 100 horsepower, good for a 0 to 60 time of 11.9 seconds and a top speed of 112 miles per hour. The combined fuel consumption figure is 42.2 miles per gallon, and CO2 levels are at 159g/km.

The 1.6 TDCI is the lowest price diesel engine in the Focus line up, and apart from the Econetic, it is the most fuel efficient. There are 2 options, 90 or 110 horsepower. The 1.6TDCi 90 bhp has a 0-60 time of 12.6 seconds and a top speed of 110 mph. Fuel economy is a great 62.7 mpg with CO2 at only 115g/km giving £35 a year road tax. The 110 horsepower version costs only slightly more, and has an improved 0-60 time of 10.9 seconds, a higher top speed of 117 mph, and identical CO2 emissions and fuel consumption, so it’s the one we would go for.

The 2012 Ford Focus Econetic is the “greenest” model in the range, and is a tweaked version of the 1.6 TDCi, with subtle tweaks to improve fuel economy, from slight aerodynamic changes to a remapped ECU, and longer gear ratios in higher gears to help give the best fuel consumption figures in the range. Combined fuel economy fig rise to 65.6, whilst CO2 drops to 104 g/km. The Econetic model is available in either the 90 or 110 horsepower formats of the 1.6 TDCi diesel engine. The 1.8 petrol engine is the mid level option of the 4 petrol motors offered. It has 125 horsepower, good for a 0 to 60 dash in 10.3 seconds and a top speed of 123 miles per hour. Fuel economy is OK at 40.3 miles per gallon on the combined cycle, and CO2 is at the 167 mark.

The 2.0 petrol is the first model in the range to be available with an automatic gearbox as an option, and is only available to order in the higher spec Zetec S and Titanium trim levels. The engine produces 145 horsepower and has a 0-60 time of 9.2 seconds, with a top speed of 128 mph, this is blunted only slightly if you select the auto box. Fuel economy is a respectable 39.8 mpg with CO2 levels at 169 g/km.

The Focus 2.0 TDCi diesel is the most powerful diesel in the range, with 136 bhp, giving a 0-60 time of 9.3 seconds and a top speed of 126 mph. Fuel economy is a combined figure of 51.3 mpg and CO2 levels are at 144 g/km.

Ford Focus ST

The 2012 Ford Focus ST has a 2.0 litre turbocharged engine, good for a whopping 230 horsepower giving a great 0-60 time of 6.8 seconds and a top speed of 150 miles per hour. The ST is a real performance bargain and has been found to be easily tunable well beyond these levels of power. The ST has several specifications, the standard car, the ST2 and ST3 having the same performance but higher levels of standard spec, the ST also has some model specific colours: Electric Orange, Electric white and Performance Blue Tri-coat metallic paint. The Focus makes a great everyman performance car, being able to do all the practical every day thing a standard Focus is capable of, but go like a rocket-ship if you need it to.

Ford Focus Style
