The New Ford Fusion is a cross between a people carrier and a traditional small hatchback, and is based on the outgoing Fiesta’s chassis and suspension. It also shares that models engine range, so has a couple of really excellent diesel motors available. The Fusion not only rides a little higher and a little softer than the Fiesta, it also has a raised roof height making getting in and out of the car much easier, especially for those of restricted movement, or the more elderly among us.

Specification

The 1.4 petrol engine is the smallest in the range, but still has a decent spread of power, but does need revving hard if you’re planning a lot of overtaking. The petrol engine produces 80 horsepower and has a 0 to 60 time of 14 seconds, with a top speed of 101 mph. Fuel economy is a decent 43.5 mpg with CO2 levels at 154 g/km, both not bad but easily beaten by the excellent diesel engines on offer.

The 1.4 TDCi diesel is the lowest priced and powered diesel engine in the range, but still has just 68 horsepower, enough to take it from 0-60 in 16.3 seconds and on to a top speed of 98 miles per hour. the 1.4 diesel is very fuel efficient, with a combined fuel economy figure of 62.8 miles per gallon and C02 rating at 120 g/km. the engine does a decent job of lugging the car around but if you want a real brisk performer look at the 1.6 diesel.

The 1.6 petrol is the larger of the 2 petrol engines on offer and is only available with either the Zetec or the Titanium trim levels. The petrol engine produces 100 horsepower and has a 0 to 60 time of 11.1 seconds, noticeable faster that the 1.4, and with a top speed of 111 mph. Fuel economy is a middling 42.8 mpg with CO2 levels at 157 g/km, making the 1.6 diesels the more popular (but more expensive) choice.

The 1.6 TDCi diesel is the top spec diesel in the range and has 90 horsepower. The engine suits the car well, giving very good fuel economy figures, almost identical to the smaller 1.4 litre diesel engine, and gives a combined fuel consumption figure of 62.8 mpg and CO2 levels at 119 g/km – again lower than the 1.4 diesel. Performance is brisk with a 0-60 time of 12.9 seconds and a top speed of 109 mph, a little slower than the 1.6 petrol, but the mid range torque more than makes up for it in most real life situations.

Ford Fusion Style Plus

The Style+ specification is the lowest price spec, and for standard equipment it gets: 15” Steel wheels, electric front windows (but not rear) stereo radio / CD player, remote central locking with immobiliser, music connection socket, Anti lock brakes, 60/40 split fold rear seats, fold flat front passenger seat back with table, electric heated door mirrors, heated front windscreen, and air conditioning. Ford Fusion Zetec
