The New Ford Galaxy 2012 model is the largest of the 3 people carriers in the range. The old Galaxy model was originally developed alongside Volkswagen’s Sharan and the Seat Alhambra, but the all new model shares nothing in common with previous versions and is more closely related to the S-Max model, with which it shares suspension and engines. The Galaxy is very much a full size MPV and whereas the S-Max is a sort of 5+2 child seats, the Galaxy can seat 7 adults in comfort and take their luggage too. It is not quite as crisp handling as the S-Max due to the extra height, but still can take corners with much more agility than its almost van like size would suggest and is a great car for the extended family. There’s a choice of 5 engines for sale, either a 2.0 litre or a 2.3 litre petrol or 1.8, 2.0 and 2.2 litre diesels, with the 2.0 and 2.2 diesels being our choice.

The 1.8 TDCi diesel is the lowest priced and powered diesel engine in the range, but still has a decent amount of poke, there are 2 power levels available, either choice of either 100 or 125 horsepower, enough to take it from 0-60 in 11.4 seconds (13.8 in the 100 horsepower version) and on to a top speed of 114 miles per hour (106 in the 100 horsepower version). the 1.8 Diesel is economical too with a combined fuel economy figure of 45.6 miles per gallon and C02 rating at 165 g/km for both power levels. the 125 bhp engine does a decent job of lugging the car around, the power delivery is a little all-or-nothing, but if you want a real brisk performer look at the 2.0 or the 2.2 diesel.

The Galaxy 2.0 petrol engine is a sweet revving unit to use, but is often overlooked and the 2.0 diesel chosen due to its superior fuel consumption figures. The petrol engine produces 145 horsepower and has a 0 to 60 time of 10.7 seconds, with a top speed of 121 mph. Fuel economy is a middling 34.5 mpg with CO2 levels at 197 g/km, making the diesels the more popular choice.

The 2.0 TDCi diesel is the mid level diesel in the range and has 140 horsepower. It is also the best seller in the range and our choice. The engine suits the car well, giving very good fuel economy figures, slightly better than the smaller 1.8 litre engine, and gives a combined fuel consumption figure of 47.1 mpg and CO2 levels at 159 g/km – again lower than the 1.8 diesel. Performance is brisk with a 0-60 time of 9.9 seconds and a top speed of 120 miles an hour. Prices and deals are good, so the 2.0 TDCi diesel is our pick.

The 2.2 TDCi diesel is the most powerful diesel in the range, giving a whopping 175 horsepower, enough to get the car from 0-60 in 9.1 seconds and on to 129 mph, and makes the car feel genuinely fast, with a real verve to the acceleration. C02 emissions jump slightly to 179g/km and fuel economy suffers just a little over the 2.0 diesel with a combined figure of 42.2 mpg. The 2.2 diesel is a very flexible and powerful unit, ideal for motorway work with plenty of mid range torque, and good for overtaking. The 2.2 TDCi engine is only available in the top spec Ghia trim level, and with only the top spec on offer, it works out at quite a jump up from the 2.0 TDCi diesel in price, but our Orangewheels discounts can help you with that!

The 2012 Ford Galaxy Zetec is the mid range specification in the line up and in addition to the basic Edge spec, the Zetec also comes with: 16” alloy wheels, locking wheel nuts, body colour door handles, front and rear parking sensors, climate control, dual exhaust (on larger engined variants), electric rear windows, lumbar support, electric height adjustable drivers seat, folding seat back trays, leather steering wheel and gear knob, extra courtesy lights and illuminated vanity mirrors, and a tonneau cover.
