The New Ford Kuga 2012 model is a belated entry for sale in the compact 4×4 segment from Ford, but is thankfully one of the best cars on the market in this category. It shares the family good looks – angular and aggressive with hints of both the Focus and the new Fiesta in there, whilst managing to appear dynamic and not at all boxy like a typical off roader. This style carries through into the way the car drives, with pin sharp handling that suggests the car is more at home on the tarmac than off it. The range is restricted to just 2 engines, a refined and torquey 2.0 turbo diesel and a raucous 2.5 litre turbo petrol engine from the Focus ST.

The 2.0 diesel is available in either 2 or 4 wheel drive, and is a torquey but not overly powerful unit. It has 136 horsepower, good for a 0-60 time of 10.7 seconds, and a top speed of 112 mph. The 4 wheel drive version has the most weight, so its fuel economy figures are at 44.1 miles per gallon combined and CO2 figures at 169 g/km, whereas the 2 wheel drive Kuga improves upon that with a better fuel economy figure of 46.3 mpg and a lower CO2 rating at 159 g/km. both are only available with a manual gearbox, for an auto, you have to look at the petrol version. Kuga 2.5T

The new 2.5T is the most powerful model in the range and is available both as a manual and with an automatic gearbox. The engine is taken from the Focus ST model and is a 2.5 litre turbocharged petrol unit that is detuned to 200 horsepower, and gives a rapid 0-60 time of 8.2 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph. It is only available with 4 wheel drive, and its fuel economy figures unsurprisingly cannot match the 2.0 diesel version, with combined figures of 28.5 mpg and CO2 rating at 234 g/km, so not ideal as a company car, but for those of you looking for a performance 4×4 with good power levels and great handling on a budget, then this is the car for you.
