The new 1.6 litre petrol engine is the smallest and has the lowest prices in the range, but has a good deal of zing about it. The 1.6 petrol engine comes in 2 power levels: 110 horsepower and 125 horsepower. The 110 is the cheapest, and is good for a 0 to 60 time of 12.4 seconds and a top speed of 118 miles per hour. The combined fuel consumption figure is 39.2 miles per gallon, and CO2 levels are at 170g/km. The 125 bhp car has a 0 to 60 time of 11.9 seconds and a top speed of 121 miles per hour. The 1.8 TDCi diesel is the lowest priced and powered diesel engine in the range, coming like the 1.6 with 2 power levels, either 100 horsepower or 125 horsepower. The 100 horsepower model has similar performance to the 1.6 petrol versions, giving a 0-60 time of 11.9 seconds and a top speed of 115 mph. Fuel economy is a combined figure of 50.4 mpg and CO2 levels are at 149 g/km. The more powerful 125 horsepower version is the one to go for if you can afford it as it comes with identical CO2 and fuel consumption figures but has much better performance with a 0-60 time of 10.4 seconds, and a top speed of 124 mph, and in the real world it feels usefully faster. The 1.8 TDCi also comes in an Econetic version.

The 2012 Ford Mondeo Econetic is the “greenest” model in the range, and has availability as a modified version of both the 1.8 and 2.0 TDCi diesel engines, with subtle tweaks to improve fuel economy, from slight aerodynamic changes to a remapped ECU, and longer gear ratios in higher gears to help give the best fuel consumption figures in the range. Combined fuel economy figures rise, whilst CO2 drops compared to standard cars. The Econetic model is available in the 125 horsepower 1.8 diesel and the 115 horsepower 2.0 TDCi diesel engine, both have a lower CO2 value at 139 g/km and very similar fuel economy figure improving on the standard cars by about 3-4 mpg. The 2.0 petrol engine is a sweet revving unit to use, but is often overlooked and the 2.0 diesel chosen due to its superior fuel consumption figures. The petrol engine produces 145 horsepower and has a 0-60 time of 9.7 seconds, with a top speed of 130 mph. Fuel economy is a middling 35.8 mpg with CO2 levels at 189 g/km, making the diesels the more popular choice.

The 2.0 TDCi diesel is like several other engines available with multiple horsepower levels. It comes in either a 115 bhp version or a 140 bhp version, and as previously mentioned, also has an econetic variant. The basic 115 bhp model’s fuel economy is a combined figure of 54.3 mpg and CO2 levels are at 139 g/km, the more powerful 140 horsepower variant has a 0-60 time of 9.3 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph, but suffers in the fuel consumption stakes by dropping slightly to 47.9 mpg and CO2 rises to 156 g/km. The 140 horsepower car also has the option of an automatic gearbox, and is the first in the range to do so, but this does have an impact of fuel economy and emissions figures.

The 2.2 TDCi diesel is the most powerful diesel in the range, giving a whopping 175 horsepower, enough to get the car from 0-60 in 8.4 seconds and on to 139 mph. C02 emissions jump slightly to 165g/km and fuel economy suffers just a little over the 2.0 diesel with a combined figure of 45.6 mpg. The 2.2 diesel is a very flexible and powerful unit, ideal for motorway work with plenty of mid range torque.

The 2.5T uses the 2.5 litre turbocharged engine from the Focus ST. The Mondeo’s already crisp handling is sharpened up further, and the car makes a great everyman performance car, being able to do all the practical everyday things a standard Mondeo is capable of, but go like a rocket-ship in a straight line if you need it to.
