The New Ford S-Max 2012 model would normally be the largest people carrier in a manufacturers range but as the Galaxy is the largest people carrier that the brand currently offers, the S-Max sits as the mid sized MPV. It is based loosely on Mondeo underpinnings, and as such has all the agility and crisp handling you would expect from a Ford, combined with the practicality of a people carrier, and is a full seven seater. The final pair of seats are really best suited to children as they can be a little tight for a 6 foot adult, but the car is a great all rounder, and all the seats fold flat for a load space almost rivalling a Transit van if you need it. Ford S-Max 2012

The 1.8 TDCi diesel is the lowest priced and powered diesel engine in the range, but still has 125 horsepower, enough to take it from 0-60 in 10.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 118 miles per hour. the 1.8 Diesel is economical too with a combined fuel economy figure of 45.6 miles per gallon and C02 rating at 164 g/km. the engine does a decent job of lugging the car around but if you want a real brisk performer look at the 2.0 or the 2.2 diesel.

The 2.0 petrol engine is a sweet revving unit to use, but is often overlooked and the 2.0 diesel chosen due to its superior fuel consumption figures. The petrol engine produces 145 horsepower and has a 0 to 60 time of 10.4 seconds, with a top speed of 122 mph. Fuel economy is a middling 34.9 mpg with CO2 levels at 194 g/km, making the diesels the more popular choice.

The S-Max 2.0 TDCi diesel is the mid level diesel in the range and has 140 horsepower. The engine suits the car well, giving very good fuel economy figures, slightly better than the smaller 1.8 litre engine, and gives a combined fuel consumption figure of 47.1 mpg and CO2 levels at 159 g/km – again lower than the 1.8 diesel. Performance is brisk with a 0-60 time of 9.7 seconds and a top speed of 122 mph.

The 2.2 TDCi diesel is the most powerful diesel in the range, giving a whopping 175 horsepower, enough to get the car from 0-60 in under 9 seconds and on to 132 mph, and makes the car feel genuinely fast, with a real verve to the acceleration. C02 emissions jump slightly to 175g/km and fuel economy suffers just a little over the 2.0 diesel with a combined figure of 42.8 mpg. The 2.2 diesel is a very flexible and powerful unit, ideal for motorway work with plenty of mid range torque, and good for overtaking. The 2.2 TDCi engine is only available in the top spec Titanium trim level, it’s a little expensive compared to other models but our Orangewheels discounts can help you with that!

The 2.5T uses the 2.5 litre turbocharged engine from the Focus ST, and gives great performance, with 220 horsepower it is smooth and very powerful, with a 0 to 60 time of just 7.4 seconds and a top speed of 143s mile per hour. As you would expect is is not particularly brilliant on the fuel economy, with average fuel consumption figures of around the 30 mpg mark, and CO2 ratings at 224 g/km, meaning this is a car to buy if you have a family but also enjoy the performance and can absorb the higher running costs.

The Edge specification is the lowest price spec, and for standard equipment it gets: 16” steel wheels with hubcaps, the usual accompaniment of airbags, isofix mountings for the child seats, alarm with immobiliser and remote central locking, heated quick clear front windscreen, front fog lights, CD radio 6000 system, bluetooth with voice activation, portable music player connection socket, air conditioning, centre console with armrest, electric front windows, 3rd row fold flat seats (unless you select the 5 seat model), trip computer, outside temperature gauge, and a reach and rake adjustable steering column. Ford S-Max Zetec
