The Accord like several cars in the Honda range has been with us for a rather long time, now being in its eighth generation, first being launched in 1976 not long after the Civic. Again the car has different styles dependant on which market it’s sold in – the current European version is completely different to the US version which sells as an Acura in the states – but anyway, back to what matters which is the car we get in the UK. Engines

There are 3 different engines available in the Accord, starting with the cheapest, which is the 2.0 litre i-VTEC petrol engine, available as a manual or automatic, which puts out 156 horsepower, and gives a 0-60 time of 9.6 seconds and a top speed of 134 miles per hour, whilst returning a none too shabby 39.2 mpg.

The most popular seller by far as you would expect is the 2.2 i-DTEC diesel engine, which puts out a very similar performance to the 2.0 petrol having an identical 150 horsepower, top speed of 132 mph but wins on several counts – mid range acceleration is much stronger thanks to a higher torque figure, CO2 levels are much lower meaning cheaper road tax and company car tax, and most importantly fuel economy rises to a rather good 50.4 mpg.

The top of the range but seldom bought engine is the 2.4 litre petrol – a strong seller in the US, but with fuel prices rising ever higher here in the UK, it comes a distant 3rd in the sales charts. power is excellent at 201 horsepower, giving a 0-60 time of 7.8 seconds, but the all important fuel economy drops to 31.4 mpg.

Specification

There are 3 different spec levels available in the range, starting with the entry level Honda Accord ES, which as standard equipment gets: 16” alloy wheels, cruise control, climate control air con, front and rear electric windows, thatcham category one alarm, CD player with Aux-In socket and electric heated door mirrors.

Next up in the range is the Honda Accord ES GT, which adds the following to the standard ES spec: GT Aero kit, 17” alloys, sports suspension, front fog lights, alloy gear knob, bluetooth hands free system, and a leather steering wheel.

Top of the range in terms of spec is the EX, based on the ES it also comes with 17” alloy wheels, sports suspension, dual zone climate control, full leather seats, memory seats, electric heated front seats, automatic headlights, rain sensing wipers, front and rear parking sensors, Aux-in for an MP3 player, leather steering wheels, sunroof (2.2 and 2.4 engine models only) and satellite navigation.
