New Mercedes A-Class

The New Mercedes A-Class is now in its second generation and every bit as innovative and desirable as it was when it was launched. having great space for 5 people with fantastic headroom compared to most cars of its size, along with a compact shape making parking and manoeuvring easy. The A Class is every inch a Mercedes and very much a premium car despite its size, with fantastic quality materials and typical excellent Germanic build. The car has been bought typically as a second vehicle by customers who already own a larger Mercedes-Benz and want the same uncompromising qualities in a manageable package for short trips into town and as a runabout.

Mercedes A160 Petrol

The Mercedes A160 is the smaller of the 2 petrol engines offered in the manufacturers range. It has 95 bhp, a top speed of 109 mph and a 0-60 time of 12.6 seconds. It feels lively enough for a car of this size. Don’t let the A160 name fool you, the engine is in typical Mercedes fashion a 1.5 litre 8 valve petrol unit, not a 1.6 litre. it produces 143 g/km of CO2 and gives a very respectable 47.1 mpg in the BlueEfficiency trim as a manual car. Mercedes A180 Petrol

The A180 is the larger of the 2 petrol engines and has 116 horsepower, giving a faster 0-60 time of 10.9 seconds, along with a decent top speed of 116 mph. As with the A160, the A180 is actually a 1.7 litre engine, not a 1.8, and it gives an average of 44.8 mpg on a run. CO2 figures are at 151 g/km for the manual, and again the A180 petrol is available either with a manual or the firms CVT automatic “Autotronic” gearbox. Mercedes A160 CDI

The A160 CDI diesel is the most popular choice out of the A-Class range. Confusingly it is a 2.0 diesel engine with 80 bhp, a top speed of 106 mph and a 0-60 time of 15 seconds – not the most impressive set of performance figures for a 2.0 diesel but Mercedes has tweaked the engine for fuel efficiency and economy rather than power, so the car has a fantastic fuel consumption figure of 64.2 mph with an impressively low CO2 figure of 117 g/km. Mercedes A180 CDI

The Mercedes A180 CDI diesel is the more powerful of the 2 diesel engines, but is exactly the same size – a 2.0 Turbodiesel. It has a stronger 109 bhp giving a much better 0-60 time of 10.8 seconds and a top speed of 116 mph. The downside to this extra power is the fuel economy with it just lagging behind the A160 with a still respectable 56.5 mpg and a CO2 figure of 134 g/km. A-Class Classic SE Specification

The Classic SE spec is the entry level specification for the A Class, and comes with a basic level of standard equipment that includes: 15” Steel Wheels, front fog lamps, Alarm with immobiliser, ESP anti skid, Isofix seats, tyre pressure warning system, hill start assist, single CD radio with 6 speakers and bluetooth interface, cup holders, drivers seat height adjustment, split fold rear seats, multifunction steering wheel with trip computer, outside temperature gauge, electric front windows, air conditioning, and a high-gloss black cabin trim.

A-Class Elegance SE Specification

The Elegance SE is the traditionalist choice for specification, as its main focus is providing a more luxurious place to be. On top of the Classic specification, it comes with: 16” 10 spoke alloy wheels with locking wheel bolts, auto-dim rear view mirror, bulb failure indicator, automatic headlights, rain sensing wipers, passengers seat height adjustment, lumbar support, sun visors with illuminated vanity mirrors, Myrtle wood trim on the interior, upgraded cloth/leather seats, leather steering wheel and handbrake, front centre armrest, and reading lights in the rear.

A-Class Avantgarde SE Specification

Avantgarde is probably the closest thing Mercedes offer to Sport trim on the A Class. the specification is almost identical to the Elegance above, only with 5 poke 16” alloys rather than the 10 spoke, and smoke grey brushed aluminium trim replacing the wood on the interior, making the car appear a little more modern and less traditional inside.

A-Class BlueEFFICIENCY

The A-Class BlueEfficiency models are the eco versions of the A-Class,tweaked to give improved emissions and fuel consumption and are standard on all the manual versions. They is not available on the automatic version as the gearbox saps some of the fuel efficiency and increases CO2. The petrol BlueEfficiency models also feature a stop-start feature that cuts the engine while idling in heavy traffic and automatically restarts it once you press the accelerator.

Colours available on the A-Class are as follows Metallics: Cosmos Black, Delta Green, Horizon Blue, Lotus Blue, Mountain Grey, Polar Silver, Saturn Red, and Steppe Brown; Solid colours are: Cirrus White, Jupiter Red and Night Black.
