New Mercedes B-Class

The New Mercedes B-Class 2012 model straddles 2 genres: the mid size hatchback segment occupied by the likes of the VW Golf, and the compact MPV segment as it has MPV-like space inside with its tall roof-line giving the cabin a spacious airy feel. The B-Class carries all the build quality and expensively crafted materials that you would expect of a luxury car, but in a package the size of a family hatchback.

Mercedes B160 Petrol

The Mercedes B160 is the smaller of the 2 petrol engines offered in the range. It has 95 bhp, runs the 0-60 in 13.2 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 108 mph. The engine pulls the car along well enough but does need a few revs to do so. Don’t let the name fool you, the engine is actually a 1.5 litre 8 valve petrol unit, not a 1.6 litre as the name suggests. The motor produces 149g/km of CO2 and gives a very decent 44.1 mpg in fuel consumption as a manual car. It is also available with the CVT automatic transmission that the Merc calls “Autotronic”. Mercedes B180 Petrol

The A180 is the largest of the 2 petrol motors on offer with 116 horsepower, a 0 to 60 time of 11.3 seconds, along with a decent top speed of 116 mph. As with the B160, the B180 is actually a 1.7 litre capacity, not a 1.8 litre and it gives an average of 44.8 mpg on a run. CO2 figures are at 146 g/km for the manual, and again the B180 petrol, like the smaller motor is available either with a manual or M-B’s CVT automatic “Autotronic” gearbox. Mercedes B180 CDI

The B180 CDI is actually a 2.0 diesel engine rather than a 1.8, with 109 horsepower and a 0 to 60 time of 11.3 seconds and a top speed approaching 114 miles per hour. The car has pretty good emissions levels with a CO2 of 136g/km and fuel consumption to match with economy figures of 54.3 mpg combined. This is the most popular model in the B-Class range and the biggest seller.

Mercedes B200 CDI

The Mercedes B200 CDI diesel is based on exactly the same engine as the B180, just in a higher state of tune, producing a very respectable 140 bhp. This propels it from 0-60 in a decent 9.6 seconds and on to 124 miles an hour top speed. B-Class SE Specification

There is a wonderfully simple choice of specifications on the Mercedes B-Class 2012 model, you have the choice of either SE or sport spec. SE spec gives you as standard: 16” 5 spoke alloy wheels, a new addition of a glass panoramic sunroof, front foglights, comfort suspension, ESP with skid protection, first aid kit, warning triangle, automatic headlights, isofix seats, rain sensing wipers, central locking with alarm, tyre pressure warning, air conditioning, radio CD player with 6 speakers and bluetooth interface, front centre armrest, cup-holders, electric front and rear windows, leather steering wheel, multifunction steering wheel, trip computer, and brushed aluminium trim in the cabin.

B-Class Sport Specification

The Sport version is very similar in spec to the SE, being more of a different appearance than an upgrade. The sport version loses the standard panoramic roof, gets firmer suspension, larger sportier looking 17” alloy wheels, tinted tail lights, sports gearshift, sports pedals, and a half leather interior. B-Class BlueEFFICIENCY

The B-Class BlueEfficiency models are the green eco versions of the B-Class, and are now standard on all the manual petrol versions. The BlueEfficiency models feature modified ECU’s to give better fuel consumption and a stop-start feature that cuts the engine while idling in heavy traffic and automatically restarts it once you press the accelerator.
