The New Mercedes CLC is the continuation of the first generation Sport Coupe model, based on a cut down C-Class chassis it is part rear-drive coupe, and part 3 door C-Class. The CLC gives the Sport Coupe the new family Mercedes look with lights and grille similar to the new C Class saloon, and it has an updated interior, but is fundamentally the same as the old model which is not a bad thing. It competes indirectly with the BMW 1 series coupe, as the cars are in the same market segment but very different in character and unlikely to attract similar buyers. Mercedes CLC 160

The Mercedes CLC 160 is smallest of the 3 petrol engines offered and the entry model into the range. It is a 1.6 litre 16 valve supercharged engine with 129 bhp, a top speed of 130 mph and a 0-60 time of 11.2 seconds. not quick for a coupe, but by no means a slouch for a 1.6 engine. It gives 41.5 miles per gallon on the EU combined cycle and has CO2 emissions at the 156g/km level. The 1.6 is a decent little engine and while it needs working to get the best out of it, it is a pleasure to rev. Mercedes CLC 180K

The CLC 180K is the mid range petrol engine, also supercharged like its siblings, and gives 143 bhp from its 1.8 litre engine. This propels the car from 0-60 mph in 9.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 139 mph. fuel economy is down slightly from the 160 to 39.2 mpg while CO2 emissions rise slightly to 170 g/km. Manual and automatic transmissions are available. Mercedes CLC 200K

The CLC 200K has a big step up in power over the smaller petrol engined variants listed above, with a whopping 184 bhp, giving a much improved 0-60 time of 8.6 seconds and a top speed of 145 mph. All this extra go has surprisingly little effect on the fuel consumption compared to the 1.8, with the average being 38.7 mpg, just 0.5 mpg less that the 1.8 litre. CO2 emissions are up to 174g/km. Mercedes CLC 200 CDI

The Mercedes CLC 200 CDI diesel is actually a 2.2 litre engine in a low state of tune, giving just 122 bhp, and a top speed of 129 mph, whilst taking 11.3 seconds to get to 60 mph. This would be excusable with a very good set of economy figures, but they are distinctly average – fuel consumption is 48.7 mpg on the combined cycle, and CO2 emissions are 152 g/km. The choice of specifications on the CLC is nice and straightforward.
