Mercedes S350

The Mercedes S350 is the entry model into the S Class range, and features a 3.5 litre V6 petrol engine which produces a very respectable 272 horsepower, which propels the car to a 0 to 60 time of just 7.2 seconds and on to a top speed limited to 155 mph, not bad figures for such a large car. Mercedes S350 CDI

The S500 is the second petrol model in the range and features a 388 horsepower 5.5 litre V8 petrol engine that give enough go to power the car from 0-60 in 5.6 seconds and on to a top speed limited to 155 mph. Fuel economy drops to 24 mpg, but you don’t expect fantastic consumption figures for a 5.5 litre V8 anyway. The Mercedes S600 uses a different 5.5 litre petrol engine from the S500, this time a V12 with 517 horsepower, giving a rapid 0-60 time of 5.3 seconds and a top speed again limited to 155 mph. The S600 L is only available in the long wheelbase LWB format, giving extra room in the back, and is the top choice for a limousine for heads of state and diplomats. Fuel economy isn’t really a consideration of this car but it returns 19.8 mpg if used gently. Mercedes S63 AMG

The Mercedes S63 AMG is the first of 2 ultra high performance variants of the S-Class, tuned not just for power but also sporting ability. They are noticeably firmer than a standard car which enables them to take corners at higher speeds and be driven with more enjoyment. The S63 uses a 6.2 litre V8 engine, naturally aspirated and tuned to give 525 horsepower, with a 0-60 time of 4.6 seconds, enough to embarrass many a sports car. The top speed is limited to 155 mph but this can be removed if required. The S63 gets an aggressive AMG body kit, larger alloy wheels, uprated suspension and performance brakes to handle all the extra power. Otherwise specification is similar to the S600 version. The Mercedes S65 AMG is the most powerful S Class ever produced. It uses a 6 litre V12 engine with a twin turbo set up to give a massive 612 horsepower, giving a 0-60 time of just 4.4 seconds. the S65 AMG is only available in the long wheelbase format, and is an incredibly rare sight on UK roads, with the few examples being sold mainly ion the US, China and Russia.
