The New Renault Clio continues the trend set by its predecessors of being a fantastic little super mini that is chic, affordable and fun to drive. Specification

The new 1.2 16V petrol engine is the smallest and has the lowest prices in the range, and comes in 2 different power levels – there’s the 75 horsepower standard version which has a 0-60 time of 13.4 seconds and a top speed of 104 mph – it’s not a bad performer and better than the entry level models in some other manufacturers, and gives a mpg figure of 47.9 mile per gallon, but if you want the car to feel fast you need to opt for the Clio 1.2 TCE turbo engine that is available in the GT spec. This turbo is good for 100 horsepower, and in a car that weighs so little, it makes the car feel really lively, 0-60 in 11 seconds and a top speed of 114 miles per hour ,and is our pick of the engines in the range.

The new 1.5 DCi diesel is the only diesel available in the range but it has availability in 2 power levels: either 86 or 106 horsepower, with the 106 feeling particularly lively giving plenty of low down torque for overtaking. The 86 horsepower model has a 0-60 time of 12.7 seconds and goes on to its top speed of 108 mph, and gives average combined fuel figures of 64.2 miles per gallon, with CO2 levels of just 115 g/km. The more powerful diesel 106 horsepower car improves the 0-60 to 11.1 seconds and the top speed to 118 miles per hour and does feel pretty fast. It’s fuel consumption figures drop a few mpg to 61.4 mpg and CO2 levels are up to 123 g/km.

The 1.6 VVT Petrol engine is a lively performer, not quite a full on hot hatch, but definitely follows in the footsteps of its more powerful brother, the Renaultsport 200. The Clio 1.6 packs 128 horsepower, good for a 0-60 time of 9.3 seconds and a top speed of 122 miles per hour. as you would expect the fuel economy figures drop to 40.9 mpg, and CO2 rises to 160 g/km, still not bad figures for a warm hatch.

The new Renault Clio Renaultsport 200 is a truly magnificent hot hatch in the true sense of the word, packing a 2.0 litre 16V engine tuned to 200 horsepower, and fitted with a lowered widened chassis fully designed to exploit the extra power, and either on the road or the circuit the Clio Renaultsport 200 is a wonderful performer. It is optionally available with the Cup chassis which improves the handling still further, but does make it a little firm for everyday road use. The Renaultsport 200 is a great car, and has won many a motoring magazine award for being one of the best bargain hot hatches you can buy anywhere.
