The New Renault Scenic now in its 3rd generation has become a really hit as a family car and is one of the most popular sellers in its market segment. Specification

The new 1.4 TCE 16V petrol engine is the smallest engine but is does not have the lowest prices in the range, as it is a turbocharged unit with 130 horsepower and is more powerful than the larger 1.6 litre engine. This 1.4 TCE engine manages to push the car on to 118 miles per hour, whilst still returning fuel economy similar to that of a standard 1.4 litre petrol engine – 39.8 miles per gallon and CO2 levels at 168 g/km, not bad at all and it is one of the best petrol engines available in the range.

The new Renault Scenic 1.5 DCi diesel is the smaller of 3 diesels available in the range but it has availability in 2 power levels: either 86 or 106 horsepower, with the 106 feeling particularly lively giving plenty of low down torque for overtaking. The 86 horsepower model goes on to its top speed of 109 mph, and gives average combined fuel figures of 55.4 miles per gallon, with CO2 levels of just 130 g/km. The more powerful diesel 106 horsepower car improves the top speed to 111 miles per hour and does feel pretty fast. It’s fuel consumption figures drop a few mpg to 57.6 mpg and CO2 levels are up just a small amount to 134 g/km. The 1.5 diesel is popular and the most fuel efficient available, but for longer journeys the larger diesels give a little more oomph.

The 1.6 VVT Petrol engine has the lowest and cheapest price in the Scenic range, and while performance is beaten by its smaller 1.4 turbo brother, it is still more than adequate for most peoples driving needs and does not feel in any way slow. The 1.6 engine comes with 110 horsepower, does a decent job, but is beaten by the diesel when it comes to fuel economy – giving 38.2 mpg and CO2 levels at 174 g/km

The new Renault Scenic 1.9 DCi diesel is the mid range diesel in the range with 130 horsepower, putting a spring in the cars step a top speed of 121 mph and plenty of mid range torque, the 1.9 TDCi feels like it has plenty of grunt. fuel economy is still a good 51.4 mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 is low at 145 g/km.

The new Renault Scenic 2.0 DCi diesel is the most powerful diesel available in the range, with 160 horsepower (reduced slightly to 150 horsepower in the optional automatic version) it whizzes on to 127 miles an hour if you keep your foot down. there is plenty of mid range grunt for overtaking and the 2.0 DCi feels like a genuinely quick car. fuel economy drops a little over the 1.9 diesel at 42.8 mpg and CO2 rises slightly to 173 g/km, both very respectable figures for what is quite a large car.

The new Renault Scenic 2.0 petrol engine is only available with a CVT auto gearbox, which blunts still further the fuel economy lost over the 2.0 diesel version, unless you are a diesel-phobic, the 2.0 diesel automatic is by far the better choice.

Renault Scenic Extreme
