The original Mk1 model was not brought to the UK, but with the new trend for downsizing, with compact cars and smaller more fuel efficient engines, the twingo has become popular in the UK. The car uses several of its bigger brother’s engines, and is a 3 door only, incredibly nippy around town. It is offered with a choice of 3 different powered 1.2 litre engines and a top spec 1.6 litre engine in the hot Renaultsport version. Specification & Engines

The new 1.2 litre petrol engine is the smallest and has the lowest prices in the range, and comes in 3 different power levels, the standard 60 horsepower engine available in the Freeway and the Extreme spec levels has a top speed of 96 miles per hour, and takes 650 seconds to do the 0-60 dash, but gives a pretty reasonable 50.4 miles per gallon on average, has CO2 levels at 130g/km and has more than enough power for commuting or the school run. the next power level up is the Twingo 1.2 16V that comes in the dynamique specification. It has 75 horsepower, lowering the 0 to 60 time by 3 seconds down to 12 seconds, and increases the top speed to 106 miles per hour.

The 1.2 16V engine has a good bit of extra zing about it compared to the 60 horsepower version and has almost identical fuel economy at 49.6 mpg, but if you want the car to feel fast you need to opt for the Twingo 1.2 TCE engine that is available in the GT spec. This is a turbo engine, good for 100 horsepower, and in a car that weighs so little, it gives real go – 0-60 in 9.8 seconds and a top speed of 117 miles per hour.

The new 1.6 VVT Petrol engine is the most expensive and most powerful in the range, and is a true old style hot hatch, only available in the Renaultsport trim. It has 133 horsepower, giving a lively performance with a 0-60 time of 8.7 seconds and a top speed of 125 mile per hour. The fuel economy figure drops to 40 mpg as expected and CO2 rises to 165 g/km but overall it has a real zest about it and is great fun to drive.

Renault Twingo Freeway

The Freeway is the cheapest, basic specification, and the first of 5 available trim levels in the range. the Freeway is only available with the 1.2 litre 60 horsepower petrol engine, and as standard equipment it gets: 15” Steel wheels, Dashboard tray on driver’s side, Glove Box with integrated sunglasses holder, Two cup holders on centre console, Map pockets on rear of front seats, folding 2-seater rear bench seat, ABS (anti-lock braking system), EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution), Brake Assist, Front driver and passenger airbags, Front lateral airbags, Front height adjustable headrests, Rear headrests, Remote central locking, Deadlocking, R.A.I.D. Renault Twingo GT

The GT is the most powerful of the 1.2 litre models an uses the 1.2 TCE 100 horsepower engine.
