Specification

The 1.33 VVT-i is the smaller of the 2 petrol engines available, the second being a .16 litre that we will deal with below. The 1.33 4 cylinder engine has 101 horsepower, meaning respectable if not rapid performance, and good fuel economy at 48.7 mpg with a CO2 rating of 135 g/km. The 1.4 D4-D is the smaller of the 2. diesel engines available, with the larger one being a more powerful 2.0 litre – see below for details. the 1.4 diesel has 90bhp, and is a nice quite motor to use, giving a top speed of 109 mph, and a great fuel economy figure of 60.1 mpg on average. CO2 is also low at 124 g/km. The 1.4 D4-D is the best seller in the current range due to the excellent fuel economy.

The motor likes being revved but can get a little harsh at the very top end, but for smooth round town use it is excellent.

The 2.0 D4-D is the larger of the 2 diesel engines available, producing 126 horsepower, enough for a top speed of 121 mph and a 0-60 of 10.3 seconds. for longer journeys this engine is the pick of the bunch, providing good mid-range torque for motorway overtaking, and yet is quiet and refined. fuel economy is better than the 1.6 petrol at 52.3 mpg, and CO2 is also lower at 144g/km.

Toyota Auris SR180

The SR180 is a special edition performance version of the D4-D engine enlarged to 2.2 litres with the turbochargers wound up to produce a powerful 177 bhp, good enough is a light car like this to give a 0-60 time of 8.1 seconds ands a top speed of 131 mph. That does not tell the whole story however, as the SR180 produces a huge amount of mid range torque meaning acceleration and mid range overtaking is an effortless task that doesn’t ever require changing gear, just a simple push of the accelerator pedal.
