The New Toyota Avensis is the second generation of family saloon and estate cars that sell in the ultra competitive class that practically every car manufacturer has a product in, including the Ford Mondeo, Vauxhall Insignia, Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series. The Toyota Avensis 1.6 V-Matic is the smallest of the petrol engines available in the range, and feels slightly underpowered in a car this size, when its legs are stretched on the open road. It’s great for round town and shorter journeys, but needs revving when on the motorway over 80 mph. The engine develops 132 horsepower, not bad for a 1.6, enough for a 0-60 time of 10.4 seconds and a top speed of 124 mph. fuel economy is good to with an average of 43.5 mpg and a CO2 level of 152 g/km. Toyota Avensis 1.8 V-Matic

The Toyota Avensis 1.8 V-Matic is an enlarged version of the 1.6 engine, with more power – up to 146 bhp, lowering the 0-60 dash to 9.4 seconds. Thankfully fuel economy is unchanged at 43.5mpg and CO2 rises only very slightly to 154 g/km. Prices for the 1.8 litre are up £500 on the 1.6 and if you do much motorway mileage, it’s a price worth paying.

Toyota Avensis 2.0 V-Matic

The Toyota Avensis 2.0 V-Matic is the largest of the 3 V-Matic 4 cylinder petrol engines, with 152 horsepower, a 0-60 time of 9 seconds and a top speed of 127 mph. Fuel economy is still good for a 2.0 petrol motor in a car of this size, producing 40.9 mpg on average, and CO2 it at the 163 g/km level. Toyota Avensis 2.0 D4-D

The Toyota Avensis 2.0 D4-D is the most popular seller in the range, and features a 2.0 turbodiesel engine that kick out 126 horsepower, giving the car a 0-60 time of 9.7seconds, and a top speed of 124 mph, which is more than enough for most people. A faster 2.2 diesel is also available as an option. Fuel consumption is very good at 55.4 mpg on average, with CO2 emissions around the 135 g/km level, also not bad. Outright acceleration is not startling, but the diesel provides more than enough mid-range torque for a decent shove in the back when you need it.

Toyota Avensis 2.2 D4-D

The Avensis 2.2 D4-D is the more powerful diesel option. It comes in 2 power levels a 150 horsepower version and a top of the range 180 horsepower version that has lots of shove but is a little pricey. Toyota Avensis T2

The Toyota Avensis T2 is the entry level trim out of 4 different specifications available on the car: T2, TR T4 and T Spirit.
