Specification

The new 1.4 litre petrol engine is the smallest and has the lowest prices in the range, but still has a good deal of zing in it. The engine is a 16v petrol unit with 100 horsepower, which is plenty to give the car some get up and go, whilst producing a good for a petrol engine average of 51.4 miles per gallon combined, and kicking out just 129 g/km of CO2. The 1.4 engine is available in the Exclusiv, S and SRi levels. If you’re looking for a little more go, then the engine is also offered as a 1.4 turbo version – see below.

The 1.4T Turbo petrol engine is a 4 cylinder 16 valve unit, wit the turbo boosting the power from the standard 1.4’s 100 horsepower up to an impressive 140 horsepower, and it gives the car plenty of acceleration for real world conditions, and with the fuel economy being really good, it is a genuine alternative to a diesel. It has 85 horsepower, meaning plenty of real world performance for most people in a car of this size and weight. The fuel economy figure drops to 47.9 mile per gallon which is still really good for a car of this size, and CO2 is just higher at 139 g/km. The Astra 1.4T engine is available in the Exclusiv, Elite, SRi and SE equipment levels, and you can buy the car as a manual or with an automatic gearbox.

The 1.6 petrol is the larger of the 2 standard petrol engines currently available – there is no 2.0 litre at the moment. It has 115 horsepower giving plenty of acceleration when needed, but actually sits below the 1.4 turbo in the range. Fuel economy is still not bad at 44.8 miles per gallon, and CO2 is average at 147 g/km, which is not bad but beaten by the diesel model. The 1.6 Astra is also available with both a manual and a conventional automatic gearbox too, and comes in all the different spec levels.

The 1.6T turbo petrol is the most powerful petrol engine in the range and follows the current trend for downsizing engines and adding turbos to give a smaller lighter more fuel efficient package with the same power as a much larger normally aspirated engine – the 1.6 turbo gives the same power levels as a traditional 2.0 litre engine would, with a whopping 180 horsepower, giving 0-60 in 8.5 seconds, a top speed of 137 miles per hour and all while returning a decent 41.5 miles per gallon and 159g/km of CO2, not bad for that sort of power levels. The 1.6T is only available in the SE or SRi trim levels currently.

The 1.7 CDTi diesel is the the lowest price diesel engine available and comes either with 110 or 125 horsepower depending on your budget. the 110 bhp motor gives a 0-60 time of 12.6 seconds and a top speed of 112 miles per hour, whilst producing only 124 g/km of CO2 and averaging an impressive 60.1 miles per gallon. The 125 horsepower version gives improved performance managing 0-60 in 11.5 seconds and a top speed of 121 miles per hour which is more than enough everyday usable performance for most, whilst returning the same 60.1 mpg fuel economy.

The Astra Ecoflex is the name given to the most fuel efficient models in the range and also the most environmentally friendly with the lowest CO2 ratings, meaning the cheapest to run and the lowest road tax. Vauxhall Astra S
