Vauxhall Insignia 2012

The new 1.6T turbo petrol engine is the smallest but is not the least powerful in the range – it has a good deal of zing in it. The engine is a 16 valve turbo petrol unit with 180 horsepower, which is plenty to give the car some real acceleration, whilst producing an average fuel economy of 36.7 miles per gallon combined, and kicking out 179 g/km of CO2. The 1.6T is available in all specifications apart from the basic S trim level.

The 1.8 petrol is actually the entry level engine in the range, and the lowest priced, despite the 1.6T being a smaller capacity. The 1.8 litre has 140 horsepower, good for a top speed of 128 miles per hour and a 0-60 time of 11.5 seconds. Whilst the engine does not feel quick, it is a smooth engine to use but needs revs to really get into its stride in this large car. The engine gives 37.2 miles per gallon on the official combined fuel cycle, and produces 178g/km of CO2. the engine is popular because of the cheapest price, but sales wise the diesel variants are much more popular due to the more impressive fuel economy and lower CO2 meaning cheaper tax.

The new 2.0 CDTi diesel is the most popular engine in the range by far in sales terms, makes up the majority of model offered, and is also our pick. It comes in several different power levels, with a choice of 130 or 160 horsepower versions, and an Ecoflex model is also available in the 160 horsepower version, improving fuel economy still further. Performance is brisk in both versions with the 160 Ecoflex being the pick of the range for us if you can afford it, and the 2.0 CDTi diesel engine is even available with an automatic gearbox as an option if required. Fuel consumption ranges from 48.7 in the base car up to 54.7 on the ecoflex model and CO2 is around the 154 mark for the standard car and 136 g/km on the ecoflex version.

The new 2.0T turbo petrol is the most powerful petrol engine in the range and follows the current trend for downsizing engines and adding turbos to give a smaller lighter more fuel efficient package with the same power as a much larger normally aspirated engine – the 2.0 turbo gives the same power levels as a traditional 3.0 V6 litre engine would, with a whopping 220 horsepower, giving 0-60 in 7.6 seconds, a top speed of 147 miles per hour, making this a fast car, and all while returning a half decent 32 miles per gallon an 207 g/km of CO2, not bad for that sort of power and performance levels. The 2.0T is only available in the higher specification Elite, SE or SRi trim levels currently.

The Vauxhall Insignia Ecoflex is the name given to the most fuel efficient models in the range and also the most environmentally friendly with the lowest CO2 ratings, meaning the cheapest to run and the lowest road tax. the only current Ecoflex model offered is the 2.0 CDTi diesel with the more powerful 160 horsepower, but a cheaper 130 horsepower version may eventually follow. Vauxhall Insignia S
