Vauxhall Zafira 2012

The new 1.6 litre petrol engine is the smallest and has the lowest prices in the range, but still has a good deal of zing in it. The engine is a 16v petrol unit with a choice of either 105 or 115 horsepower, which is plenty to give the car some get up and go, whilst producing an average of 39.2 miles per gallon combined for the 105 horsepower version, the 115 version actually gets slightly better at 42.2 combined, not bad for a petrol engine – but the diesels are far superior, and kicking out 172 g/km of CO2 for the 105 or 159 for the 115, making the 115 a better bet if it is within budget. The 1.6 engine is available in the Life, Design and Exclusiv specification levels.

The new 1.7 CDTi diesel engine is the smaller of the 2 engines on offer – a 1.9 diesel is also available. the 1.7 engine has 110 horsepower, ands has a decent amount of torque, but does need to be used quite hard to produce serious overtaking acceleration – if you do a lot of motorway mileage you may be better with the 1.9 CDTi, but for round town the 1.7 diesel is more than adequate. The 1.7 diesel carries the brand’s ecoflex name which means it’s been tweaked for economy, so the car gives a decent 53.3 miles per gallon and CO2 levels of just 139 g/km, not bad for a quite large family car. The 1.7 diesel comes in Life, Design, Exclusiv and Elite spec levels.

The new 1.8 petrol is the mid sized motor of the 3 standard petrol engines currently available – there is no 2.0 litre at the moment, except for the turbo model in the hot VXR version. The 1.8 has 140 horsepower giving plenty of acceleration if you’re prepared to rev the engine, with a 0-60 of 10.8 seconds and a top speed of 122 miles per hour. Fuel economy is still not bad at 38.2 miles per gallon, and CO2 is average at 177 g/km, both figures are easily beaten by the diesel models. The 1.8 Zafira is also available with both a manual and the brand’s easytronic CVT automatic gearbox, and comes in Life, Design, Exclusiv, Elite and SRi models.

The 1.9 CDTi diesel is the most popular engine in the range and is our current favourite. It is available with 2 power levels – either 120 or 150 horsepower, and comes as either the standard manual or with an optional automatic gearbox. Performance is decent on the 120 horsepower, with a 0-60 time of 11.4 seconds, which jumps to 9.7 seconds on the 150 horsepower version, which feels pretty quick if you can afford the extra, both have good levels of mid range torque for busts of acceleration, and it feels comfortable on the motorway cruising at 80 mph +. fuel economy is pretty good at 47.1 miles per gallon combined and with CO2 at 159 g/km, this engine is the pick of the current range, until the company introduces a possible 2.0 diesel.

The 2.2 petrol is the largest and most powerful of the range excluding the VXR version, and is available as a manual or as auto at extra cost. It has 150 horsepower, and gives a 0-60 time of 9.9 seconds, very similar to the 1.9 diesel version, but that’s where the similarity ends – the unit is lovely and smooth, but fuel economy suffers as you would expect, with and average combined figure of 34.4 mpg, and high CO2 at 197 g/km, meaning that unless you really don’t like diesels, then the 1.9 CDTi 150 is the better choice, and the diesel has the higher residual values too.

Vauxhall Zafira Ecoflex

The Ecoflex is the name given to the most fuel efficient models in the range and also the most environmentally friendly with the lowest CO2 ratings, meaning the cheapest to run and the lowest road tax. Vauxhall Zafira Life
