New VW Beetle
The New VW Beetle 2012 model is one of the few cars for sale that has successfully managed to employ retro styling on an all new car, producing a stylish modern version of the classic Beetle. With underpinnings taken from the Golf and engines seen in the rest of the VW range, the new Beetle has reliability built in. The car has a cheeky charm and is deliberately aimed more towards the female buyer, with cute looks and interior finishes such as a miniature vase on the dashboard for a single flower. The modern design sees the engine up front, rather than in the boot like the air cooled original, and with a good range of specs, a Beetle cabrio version and low starting prices, the VW Beetle is a very accessible machine. The car is deliberately set up for comfort, so don’t expect heroics on the corners, but a quiet refined ride. |
||
VW Beetle Convertible
The 2012 VW Beetle Convertible (or Cabriolet) is an even stronger seller than the coupe, with looks enhanced by the cabrio soft top that sits pram-like on the back of the car when folded. Spec stays otherwise the same through the range, but be aware that the basic 1.4 Luna convertible has a manual roof, with the electric roof coming in on the 1.6 and above. If you wanted the electric roof on the 1.4 you can pay extra for it, but with the bigger discounts currently available on the 1.6, it’s worth looking as the costs of both convertibles as they come out to a similar price. |
||
VW Beetle Luna
The VW Beetle Luna is the entry spec for the Beetle range, and unlike other Volkswagens, this one comes in different spec levels dependent on engine size, so a 1.4 or 1.6 litre comes as a Luna only. This basic spec gives you 16” Houston alloy wheels, remote central locking with alarm, cup holders, easy entry sliding seats, electric front windows, folding rear seats, full size spare wheel, and a CD player, and is the same spec for the coupe or convertible. |
||
VW Beetle 1.4
The VW Beetle 1.4 is the entry level engine into the range and is available in the hard top or the cabriolet. The car comes as luna spec only, and is worth noting that on the 1.4 the cabrio soft top is a manual roof, so you’ll have to get out of your seat to raise and lower the roof, or go for the 1.6 upwards. The 1.4 engine itself is taken from the Polo and produces 75 bhp which is good for 100 mph (just), and round town the power levels are fine, but the engine can struggle a little on motorways. Fuel economy shows an official average of just shy of 40 mpg, and the car is available with a manual gearbox only. |
||
VW Beetle 1.6
The VW Beetle 1.6 is the next up from the 1.4 and costs and additional £960 in the coupe, or £1415 in the convertible car to take into account the electric hood. The engine is good for 102 bhp and while it isn’t the most up to date design it pulls well enough and gives an official combined figure of 37.7 mpg on average. Like the 1.4, the 1.6 is only available with a manual box. |
||
VW Beetle 1.8T
Once you move up to the VW Beetle 1.8T petrol, VW gives you a few more extras as standard. You now get air conditioning, different style alloys, leather steering wheel and front fog lights. The 1.8T spec is the top of the beetle range, and motor is taken from the older Golf GTI, so is a powerful turbocharged motor with 150 bhp which is more than enough for the Beetle chassis and can really shift the car. Fuel economy drops to 34.9 mpg, and much lower if you really use the power. The 1.8T isn’t cheap at over £16,500 for the coupe and more than £20,000 for the cabrio. |
||
VW Beetle 1.9 TDI Diesel
The VW Beetle 1.9 TDI is the only diesel engine available in the Beetle, and it’s the old 1.9 for the rest of the Volkswagen range, with 105 bhp. It isn’t the quietest engine in the world, with a bit of the usual gruff diesel rattle – rather noticeable with the roof down in the convertible, but the motor gives plenty of mid-range pull and the fuel economy is the best of the bunch with 50+ mpg. Spec includes air conditioning over the basic luna model, and the TDI is only available as a manual. |
||
VW Beetle 2.0
The VW Beetle 2.0 petrol engine comes with 115 bhp and a top speed of 115 mph. Not quite as fast as the 1.8T, as the 2.0 isn’t a turbo and the characteristics of the engine are a bit more relaxed. The 2.0 is the only Beetle available with an automatic gearbox, and that’s it’s main selling point. Spec is otherwise similar to the Luna, but with air conditioning as standard and an electric roof on the convertible. fuel economy is around 32 mpg on the manual, dropping to 30 mpg on the auto. |

Volkswagen Beetle ColoursThe 2012 VW Beetle is for sale in the following colours: Arctic Blue Silver, Gecko Green, Heavenly Blue, Platinum Grey, Reflex Silver, Shadow Blue, Black Solid, Candy White, Harvest Moon Beige, Salsa Red, Deep Black pearl, Laser Blue Pearl, and Sunflower Yellow. |

VW Beetle Prices
New 2012 VW Beetle Prices start at a bargain £11,860 for the coupe and rise to £16,560 for the top spec 1.8T which are very competitive for the marketplace, with main competitors being the Mini and the Fiat 500. Convertible prices do add a hefty £3,000 to £3,500 on top of the cost, but residuals for both models are strong due to the looks and the Volkswagen badge. Thankfully here at Orangewheels we have some of the cheapest prices in the UK on the New VW Beetle, just check out our discounts above.
