New VW Touareg

The New VW Touareg is Volkswagen’s entry into the large off roader category, and shares its underpinnings with the Porsche Cayenne as they were jointly developed. This fact bodes well for the handling as the Touareg takes corners well for such a large car, although it is set up more for comfort than sporting ability like the Porsche. build quality is excellent, and the high quality materials used throughout the interior make it feel very upmarket.

VW Touareg 2.5 TDI Diesel

The VW Touareg 2.5 TDI diesel is the smallest engine in the Touareg range, but it has 170 bhp and still does a good job of pulling round a car of this size. It is a little coarse when compared to the new 3.0 litre diesel as the 2.5 TDi is an older design, but is economical for such a large car with a combined 27.4 mpg, topping out at 114 mph. The 2.5 TDi is available as manual or automatic.

VW Touareg 3.0 TDI Diesel

The VW Touareg 3.0 TDI diesel has recently been completely redesigned with a new common rail fuel injection system that makes it much more refined and economical. diesel clatter is banished, with only a hint of rattle from a cold start up. The 3.0 TDI proves the ideal match for the big Touareg, giving plenty of effortless mid range pull, with 240 bhp which is enough to get the car from 0-60 in just over 8 seconds, and on to 127 mph. Fuel economy stays at a sensible 28.5 mpg, beating the 2.5 litre. The 3.0 TDI is available with an automatic gearbox only.

VW Touareg 3.6

The VW Touareg 3.6 V6 petrol motor is taken from the Passat R36, and while it is more powerful than the 3.0 tdi, it loses out on torque, meaning the car needs revving a fair bit more than the diesel. It is beautifully refined, but you would have to be a real diesel-phobe to pick this model, as the 0-60 time and all in gear acceleration figures are behind the diesel, and fuel economy only just scrapes 20 mpg. Petrol 4×4’s also suffer much worse depreciation than diesels, so it’s likely to lose lots more money, and the 3.6 V6 biggest market is more likely to be America. The 3.6 is available with an automatic gearbox only.

VW Touareg 5.0 V10 TDI

The VW Touareg 5.0 V10 TDI has its massive diesel engine completely dominate the driving experience. Huge amounts of mid range pull from the torque figure of 550 lb/ft throw you towards the horizon at a frankly silly speed for such a big 4×4, which is great fun but the rest of the package is more tourer than sports car, so expect to brake heavily for the corners! There is only so much that being a diesel can do for fuel economy figure when you have 5 litres sucking away, with a combined figure of 22 mpg, still beating the 3.6 petrol though. These will be a rare but entertaining sight on UK roads. The 5.0 litre is auto only.

VW Touareg Spec

Standard VW Touareg Spec includes 17” Alloys, tinted glass, leather steering wheel, air conditioning, Diff lock for off roading, CD with 10 speakers, electric windows, front armrest, cooled glovebox, multifunction computer, split fold seats, and a host of electronic traction aids to help should you want to go into the muddy stuff. This standard spec is available on the 2.5 or 3.0 diesel models.

VW Touareg SE

The VW Touareg SE is the mid range spec, and gives you these extras above standard: Larger 18” alloy wheels, chrome exterior trim, front fog lights, ‘cricket’ leather upholstery, walnut wood trim, 2 zone climate control, 6 CD Changer, Cruise control, DVD touch screen sat nav, heated seats, multifunction steering wheel and a multimedia socket for your MP3 player. SE Spec is available in all engine sizes.

VW Touareg Altitude

The VW Touareg Altitude is Volkswagen’s high spec version, and comes with a set of lovely 19” alloys, (20” on the V10) body styling kit with new front and rear bumpers, dark tinted glass, sports exhaust finishers, and a Piano Black interior trim in place of the walnut.

Volkswagen Touareg Colours

Colours available on the Touareg are: Arctic Blue Silver, Atacama Grey, Galapagos, Reflex Silver, shadow Blue, Black Solid, Campanella White and Diamond Black.
