New VW Touran

The New VW Touran is Volkswagen’s mid sized people carrier (for larger see the VW Sharan) and comes with either 5 or 7 seats as a no cost option. It is built on top of a stretched golf platform, and as such benefits from the smaller cars tidy handling and refined ride. As usual with all Volkswagen products, the car gives a great combination of conservative yet classy styling, a stylish interior with high quality fixtures and fittings, and a solid reliability that the brand is known for. There is a clever combination of folding seats, seeing the final row fold flat into the floor, and all sorts of configurations (over 500 in total) for the remaining seats, meaning it is incredibly practical for moving the family about. There is a wide range of established engines shared with the rest of the range, and a good variety of trim levels.

VW Touran 1.4 TSI

The VW Touran 1.4 TSI is the smallest engine in the range, but by no means the least powerful or least expensive – the old 1.6 is a fair bit cheaper. The 1.4 TSI engine takes over from the older 1.6 in many respects – it is lighter, more powerful due to the supercharger at 140 bhp and only available in mid spec SE trim. It gives a good overtaking boos when accelerating and is refined and free revving, while still returning nearly 40 mpg. There is even a DSG automatic offering.

VW Touran 1.6

The VW Touran 1.6petrol is the entry model in the range in terms of price. The engine design is getting on, and can feel a little strained when pushing hard, but still gives 102 bhp, 111 mph and mid 30’s mpg, while the cheaper cost more than makes up for the loss of performance. The 1.6 is only available in the basic S trim, and manual only.

VW Touran 1.9 TDI Diesel

The VW Touran 1.9 TDI motor has been a stalwart in the Volkswagen range for many years now. It comes in either 90 or 105 bhp forms, and has good surge of mid range torque and delivers late 40’s mpg fuel economy. The engine is starting to show its age a little when compared to the newer more expensive 2.0 diesels, and can be a little rattly from a cold start and diesel clatter can be heard if really pushed hard, but again the Touran 1.9 TDI Diesel is a budget offering, and is available in the basic S or mid range SE trim, again manual only.

VW Touran 2.0 TDI Diesel

The VW Touran 2.0 TDI diesel unit is a much newer design than the 1.9, and features common rail fuel injection, which gives more power, better economy and a much smoother and more refined motor. In this form it gives 140 bhp which is more than enough for this size car, and the mid range torque allows effortless overtaking without the need to rev the engine. Fuel economy figures are around the 48 mpg mark on the combined run, with a top speed of 125 mph, not bad for a people carrier.

VW Touran S

The VW Touran S is the basic spec for the car, and gives everything you would expect: 15” Misano alloy wheels, body coloured bumpers, roof rails, remote central locking with immobiliser, Isofix child seats, air conditioning, cruise control, cup holders, electric front windows, multifunction computer, and a CD player with 4 speakers.

VW Touran SE

The VW Touran SE is the mid range spec, and on top of the S, gives you these extras: 16” Atlanta alloys, chrome roof rails, alarm, under seat drawers, rear electric windows, front centre armrest, a better stereo with 8 speakers and Aux-In socket to plug your MP3 player into.

VW Touran Sport

The VW Touran Sport is the top spec Touran, and over the SE it gives you a lovely set of 16” Magny Cours alloys, chrome plated grille, tinted windows, leather steering wheel and gearknob, alloy interior trim, 2 zone climate control, front fog lights, sports seats, a highline multi function computer, carpet mats and rear parking sensors.

VW Touran Bluemotion

The VW Touran Bluemotion is Volkswagen’s fuel efficient version of the model. based on the standard 1.9 TDI diesel engine, but with several tweaks to eek out the best fuel economy with the lowest emissions. The Bluemotion is given low rolling resistance wheels and tyres, (meaning a set of small alloys), changes to the ECU to make the engine more efficient and cleaner, it is lowered slightly and has a set of higher gear ratios for the top 3 gear, so when you’re cruising at motorway speeds, the engine isn’t turning over as fast, so less fuel used. CO2 is down and fuel economy rises by about 5mpg. The Bluemotion models are available in either the S or SE trim for a slight premium over the std cars.

Colours available on the Touran are: Metallic Mountain Grey, Reflex Silver, Shadow Blue, Silver Leaf, Slate Grey, Wild Cherry, Solid Candy White, Indian Blue, Biscay Blue, and Deep Black pearlescent.
