The New Volvo V70 - If you want an estate car that will swallow your entire estate, and waft you along in effortless fashion, and in luxurious comfort, than look no further, this is your ideal car. There is a wonderful compromise between rugged practicality and quality build that gives the feeling that you could throw anything at the car, without feeling guilty, and it would handle it with ease. Volvo have been masters of the estate car for many years, and the breeding shines through brightly in this latest V70 - overall a thoroughbred classic.

For practicality, the car is in a class of its own. Up front the seats are some of the most comfortable, supportive seats ever made, with good levels of head and legroom. The controls are an ergonomic masterpiece, with everything ideally placed and falling readily to hand, with plenty of cubby holes for storage. The theme continues in the rear, with good levels of space for passengers, but the boot is what makes this car. This is quite simply the most thoroughly resolved and well thought out estate you can buy. Load space is vast, and full of neat little hooks, straps and levers that work perfectly, and is ideal for moving anything from the dog to the wardrobe effortlessly.

A traditional bugbear of previous generations of these Estates has been the softer suspension which, although designed to give a plusher ride, also plagued the model with excessive body roll on corners. Thankfully with this latest version, the chassis has been strengthened and both the body roll and wallowing feeling are hugely reduced, meaning a much more agile car, whilst retaining the relaxed limo like waft that the big Volvos are renowned for.

Specification

The smallest engine available is the 'DRIVe' model, with a tiny 1.6 litre diesel engine that on paper doesn't look like it would be big enough to power such a small car. In real life there is enough go there, even for motorway work with the car cruising at 80 easily. what is more difficult is overtaking manoeuvres, as these need to be planned well in advance. So if you're the sort of person who overtakes a lot then the 1.6 Diesel DRIVe isn't for you, but it you want a more sedate pace and great fuel economy then it should be the top of your list.

The D3 2.0 Diesel is has only recently been brought into the range, to give a cheaper and more fuel efficient model. Despite it being down on power compared to the petrol version, it's actually a second quicker 0-60 at 11.4 seconds, due to the high torque figure of 320 Nm, meaning that in gear acceleration figures a good, and power can be accessed more easily in the mid range without the need to rev it. Top speed is a respectable 121 mph, and fuel economy is the 2.0 diesels trump card at 47.9 mpg on average.

The D5 is the popular 5 cylinder diesel motor seen across the whole of the range,the D5 with its higher state of tune giving 185 bhp. The D5 gives that useful extra bit of go, particularly in the mid range, knocking a second of the 0-60 time down to 8.9 secs, and taking top speed to 140 mph. both have similar fuel consumption figures of 42.2 mpg, very respectable in a car of this size, and the most popular engine choice of the range.

The T6 is the newly designed top of the range 3.0 litre turbo 6 cylinder petrol engine that kicks out a massive 285 bhp, good for a 0-60 of only 7.2 seconds and a top speed of 152 mph. fuel economy isn't a strong point at 25 mpg on the combined cycle, but the engine is keen to rev and a joy to use, turning the V70 into a real performance estate.

Volvo V70 SE

The Volvo V70 has 4 levels of standard spec: the basic ES, SE, SE Lux, and R Design. The SE Spec gives you all the usual Volvo safety features such as airbags, SIPS, whiplash protection, ABS, DSTC, Isofix child seat mounts, Alarm Immobiliser, etc, along with climate control, trip computer, cruise control, electric windows, auto dimming rear view mirror with compass, electric drives seat with memory function, split fold rear seats, leather steering wheel with audio controls, aluminium trim, and CD player with 8 speakers, 17" alloys, roof rails, front fog lights and rain sensing wipers. All premium models now also come with a free upgrade to the RTI navigation system.

Volvo V70 SE Lux

The SE Lux specification is as the name suggests the luxury spec, giving you a different set of 17" alloys, active bending headlights, with headlamp cleaning, a power tailgate, electric passenger seat adjustment, heated front seats, chrome trim, reverse parking aid, wood dash inserts, leather seats, and a set of carpet mats.

Volvo V70 R Design

The V70 R Design is the sportier variant, and gives you the same spec as the SE, plus a lovely set of 18" alloys, a lowered sports chassis, rear spoiler, sports steering wheel and gear knob, leather sports seats, floor mats and a set of racing aluminium pedals, all branded with a smattering of R Design Logos.
