New Volvo C30

New Volvo C30

The New Volvo C30 range features a five strong petrol line up, starting with the entry 99bhp 1.6 model, and peaks with the fiery 217bhp 2.5 litre T5 unit which enthusiasts will recognise from the storming Ford Focus ST. The mid range power plants are a refined bunch, happily revving sweetly until the red line without becoming obtrusive. For the mpg conscious, three diesels are also offered, a 108bhp 1.6 litre, a 134bhp 2.0, and a 2.4 litre D5 model for sale. Volvo has looked to pitch this car for sale in the middle ground, with the aim of retaining the companies renowned luxurious qualities, whilst throwing more entertaining handling than traditionally expected of the range. As a result, the car has positive and direct steering, if a little lacking in feedback compared to say a Focus. Ride is slightly firmer than you’d expect but never harsh, giving an accomplished and nimble package. Reliability is always a strong point, the car continues in the vein of its larger siblings here. The mechanicals are well proven, and the interior has the same high grade soft feel plastics you’d expect, together with the Bang & Olufsen style floating aluminium centre console that is becoming a trademark. It looks good, and switchgear feels solid, although some of the buttons can be a little fiddly. In an overcrowded market segment, the Volvo C30 stands out as a distinctive quality choice. Priced beneath more expensive rivals in the BMW 1 series and Audi A3, but just above the Golf, it’s not a cheap car, but its revolutionary looks and big car feel are more than enough to carve out its own individual premium niche, making a great overall ownership proposition.

Specification

The 1.6 Petrol is the entry level engine in the range, and gives a 0-60 time of 11.6 seconds from its 100 bhp engine, with a top speed of 115 mph and a combined fuel economy figure of 40.4 mpg. It is pretty frugal for a petrol car, but needs a fair amount of revving to really get going, and fuel economy will suffer when you do. The 1.6 is great for a runabout and if you're looking for stylish car on a budget and don't do many motorway miles then this is for you.

The 1.8 Petrol is the next step up, with 125 bhp and a 0-60 of 10.8 seconds. It feels a fair bit more spritely than the 1.6, and there is more to the engine at medium speeds. Top speed is 125 mph, and average combined fuel economy is at the 38.7 mpg mark. The 1.8 is a good all rounder that doesn't cost the earth, but the diesel engines offer better economy.

The 2.0 Petrol engine is another taken from the Ford stable, and gives a 0-60 of 9.4 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph from it 145 bhp. Fuel economy is 38.2 mph, almost identical to the smaller 1.8 engine, although most buyers will still look towards the diesel variants.

The 1.6 Diesel is available in 2 formats, either the 1.6D R Design with its body kit and big wheels, or the C30 1.6D DRIVe model, which is Volvo's 'green' economy model which has been tweaked with lower emissions, higher gear ratios and engine mapping to maximise fuel efficiency. The result of all these changes gives an average fuel consumption figure of 64.3 mpg (57.6 mpg on the 1.6 R Design) and CO2 levels at 115 g/km meaning £35 a year road tax. 0-60 times aren't a strong point, but that would be missing the point of the DRIVe models.

The 2.0 Diesel is the strongest seller of the range, combining good performance and excellent fuel consumption figures. Power is around the 136 bhp mark, but it is the mid range pull you feel from this refined little engine, giving a 0-60 time of 9.4 seconds, but the in gear acceleration times wipe the floor with the 2.0 petrol model, meaning it's the diesel who would pull away when they put their foot down on the motorway, whereas the petrol driver would have to change down 2 gears and rev it to keep up. Top speed is a credible 127 mph, while fuel economy is around the 50 mpg mark. The 2.0 diesel is available either in a manual or the great new Powershift twin clutch auto gearbox.

The C30 D5 is a 5 cylinder diesel engine seen in the rest of the range, that in such a light car as the C30 gives a very good level of performance, with 185 bhp, and a 0-60 time of 7.7 seconds and a top speed of 140 mph while returning 46 mpg all adds up to a great car. The diesel isn't the most refined or quiet, but has a pleasing growl to it due to the 5 cylinder configuration, rather than the usual rattle from a typical 4 cylinder. The D5 model is available with either a manual or a conventional torque converter automatic gearbox that it calls Geartronic.

The T5 is the top of the range performance model and features the same engine as i the Fire breathing Focus ST, with a 5 cylinder unit pumping out 230 bhp through the front wheels, giving a 0-60 time of just 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 149 mph. The T5 isn't as track biased as the Focus ST, so there is a degree more give in the suspension settings, meaning a comfortable yet rapid car. the T5 is available with either a manual or a Geartronic auto box.
