Performance The Volvo C30 range features a five strong petrol line up, starting with the entry 99bhp 1.6 model, and peaks with the fiery 217bhp 2.5 litre T5 unit which enthusiasts will recognise from the storming Ford Focus ST. The mid range powerplants are a refined bunch, happily revving sweetly until the redline without becoming obtrusive. For the mpg conscious, three diesels are also offered, a 108bhp 1.6 litre, a 134bhp 2.0, and a 2.4litre D5 model which unfortunately is only available with the rather dim-witted auto gearbox, whose lethargic changes don’t match the character of this otherwise spritely car. |

Ride & Handling Volvo has looked to pitch this car in the middle ground, with the aim of retaining the companies renowned luxurious qualities, whilst throwing more entertaining handling than traditionally expected of the range. As a result, the car has positive and direct steering, if a little lacking in feedback compared to say a Focus. Ride is slightly firmer than you’d expect from a Volvo but never harsh, giving an accomplished and nimble package. |

Reliability Always a strong point, the Volvo C30 continues in the vein of its larger siblings here. The mechanicals are well proven, and the interior has the same high grade soft feel plastics you’d expect, together with the Bang & Olufsen style floating aluminium centre console that is becoming a trademark. It looks good, and switchgear feels solid, although some of the buttons can be a little fiddly. |

Specifications All Volvo C30s come with climate control, alloys and a CD player that can handle MP3’s. The popular SE spec gives you cruise control, steering wheel audio controls and a plusher interior, whilst the 2 range topping trims are the SE sport with larger alloys and a powerful looking bodykit, or the fully loaded SE lux with full leather. A popular upgrade, as with all Volvo Cars is the Winter Pack, which gives you heated seats and screen. |

Living with the Car Sharing the interior of the larger S40 is a great plus, giving a refined, familiar feel. Seats are comfortable and supportive, with plenty of head and legroom in the front, although it is worth noting that Volvo is selling the C30 as a Coupe rather than a hatchback, which means there’s no five door option, and two separate rear seats rather than a bench, rear legroom that’s not quite as spacious as some rivals, and a boot that is on the small side, but well shaped. Fuel economy is strong on all but the T5 rocketship, and brand image, coupled with the fact that only a limited amount are being produced means residuals should hold up well. Pick of the range for resale is likely to be the 2.0 Diesel SE. |

Summary In an overcrowded market segment, the Volvo C30 stands out as a distinctive quality choice. Priced beneath more expensive rivals in the BMW 1 series and Audi A3, but just above the Golf, it’s not a cheap car, but its revolutionary looks and big car feel are more than enough to carve out its own individual premium niche, making a great overall ownership proposition. |
