New Volvo S80

The New Volvo S80 is the new flagship of the range, and feels well appointed to match its status. It is physically a large car, and that is reflected in the generous head and legroom both the front and rear passengers are gifted. Seats are supportive and very comfortable, and the driving position is ideal for long journeys. The controls are neat with large robust buttons, and as expected, laid out ergonomically. Volvo Cars have an enviable reputation when it comes to reliability, and whilst this new S80 hasn’t bee around long enough for any particular faults to be recorded, it is unlikely that many will surface, as the car feels solidly constructed, and the interior materials and surfaces are all of high grade. Proven mechanicals and engines that feature in the rest of the range are a good sign, and Volvo's record on safety is second to none.

In what seems to be a trend, this new Volvo S80 has a crisper setup to its suspension than the previous model, meaning the ride is a little firmer, but resists body roll well, and yet still manages to give a good account of itself on motorways. SE Sport trim gets the new ‘Active Four-C’ chassis which will automatically adjust the dampers to the type of road you are on, and works well.

In a competitive class, the Volvo S80 provides an admirable alternative to the German offerings, with all of the charm, build quality and practicality, and none of the arrogance. The car is beautifully engineered, well equipped, and at a price that will undercut its main rivals by some margin, overall a very complete car.

Volvo S80 2.0 Petrol

The S80 2.0 Petrol engine is the entry into the S80 range, taken from the Ford parent company and is none the worse for it - smooth and happy to be worked hard, although it can struggle a little with what is quite a large car. It has a 0-60 of 11.6 seconds and a top speed of 127 miles an hour from it 145 bhp. Fuel economy is 34 mpg, which isn't bad, but a little way behind the 2.0 diesel.

Volvo S80 2.0 Diesel

The S80 2.0 Diesel is easily the most fuel efficient model, giving an average of 49.6 mpg. Despite it being down on power compared to the petrol version, it's slightly quicker from 0-60 at 11 seconds, due to the high torque figure of 320 Nm, meaning that in gear acceleration figures a good, and power can be accessed more easily in the mid range without the need to rev it as much. Top speed is a respectable 124 mph, and the 2.0 diesel is the best seller in the S80 range overall.

Volvo S80 2.4 & D5 Diesel

The S80 2.4 is the popular 5 cylinder diesel motor seen across the whole of the range, and is available in 2 forms, the straight 2.4 D with 161 bhp and the D5 with its higher state of tune giving 185 bhp for an extra £1000. The basic 2.4 Diesel is no slouch with a 0-60 of 9.5 seconds and a top speed of 130, but the D5 gives that useful extra bit of go from that extra power knocking a second of the 0-60 time down to 8.5 secs, and taking top speed to 143 mph. both have similar fuel consumption figures of 44.1 mpg, very respectable in a car of this size.

Volvo S80 2.5T

The S80 2.5 T is a petrol 2.5 litre turbo engine with 200 horsepower, giving a 0-60 time of 7.7 seconds and a 146 mph top speed, and despite being fun to use, the 2.5T is easily outsold by the diesel versions due to the 30 mpg fuel economy figures.

Volvo S80 V8

The S80 V8 is the new top of the range 4.4 litre V8 petrol engine. it is a creamy smooth languid unit that enjoys wafting the car along, but it's mainly focused towards the American market, and will be a rare sight on UK roads.

Volvo S80 SE Spec

The V70 has 4 levels of standard spec: SE, SE Lux, Sport and Executive. The SE Spec is the entry level and gives you all the usual Volvo safety features such as airbags, SIPS, whiplash protection, ABS, DSTC, Isofix child seat mounts, Alarm Immobiliser, etc, along with 17" alloy wheels, Power folding door mirrors, front fog lights, rain sensing wipers, climate control, trip computer, cruise control, auto dimming rear view mirror with compass, electric drivers seat with memory, leather steering wheel with remote audio controls, cross brushed aluminium trim, CD player with 8 speakers and an Aux In socket for your MP3 player, and all models except the 2.0 diesel come with Volvo's RTI satellite navigation system as standard.

Volvo S80 SE Lux Spec

The SE Lux specification is the next spec up as it is in most Volvo's but for a change the Executive is the very top spec. SE Lux takes the SE Spec and adds a different set of 17" alloys, active bending headlights, with headlamp cleaning, a power tailgate, electric passenger seat adjustment, heated front seats, power folding rear headrests, chrome trim, walnut dashboard, reverse parking aid, and most importantly leather seats.

Volvo S80 Executive

As the Flagship Volvo model, the S80 gets a top end 'executive' trim level that other Volvo's don't see. It gives you a 'Personal Car Communicator with heartbeat sensor and keyless drive'(what?), Metallic paint as standard, a larger set of 18" alloy wheels, rear park assist, heated rear seats, executive ventilated soft leather with a massage function, piped floor mats, a dynaudio premium sound system with a 6 CD changer and 12 speakers, rear seat audio console with headphone sockets to keep the kids amused, and eve a holder for your sunglasses.

Volvo S80 SE Sport Spec

The sport specification, as its name implies gives the car the impressive active-four-c chassis, which means computerised suspension that does a great job in the bends, and is otherwise close to the SE Lux spec, with larger 18" alloys, power passenger seat, heated seats, Aluminium trim, and ventilated leather sports style seats.

Colours available on the S80 are: Black Sapphire, Silver, Black Stone, Ice White, Barents Blue, Caper Green, Magic Blue, Oyster Grey, Ruby Red, Savile Grey, Shimmer Gold, Titanium Grey and Inscription metallic Electric Silver and Ember Black.
