In Our Eyes, the New Volvo XC60 2012 model has got to be the best looking Volvo for sale to date. With a new design style that moves even further away from the boxy lines of old, it’s great to see a 4×4 that doesn’t look at all boxy, instead sleek and elegant. Inside is just as special with the manufacturers now trademark ‘floating’ centre console finished in a variety of wood veneers, plenty of head and legroom, and some of the best seats you’ll ever sit in. Driving is just as much fun, with the chassis shared with the Freelander, but more on road focused, meaning reduced body roll in the corners, and overall a smooth luxurious ride. This is a smaller affair than the big brother XC90, so don’t expect 7 seats or quite as much boot space, but the levels of style and refinement are the same if not better.

Specification

The new D3 2.0 Diesel has just taken over from the older 2.4 litre diesel engine for the new 2012 models available from June 2010 onwards. The D3 models are classed as the most fuel efficient in the range so earn Volvo’s DRIVe tag. They all front wheel drive only whereas the more powerful D5 models are four wheel drive. The D3 is a fair bit more fuel efficient as the car is significantly lighter than the D5 version not having the 4 wheel drive gubbins strapped to the underside. the D3 has 163 horsepower, gives a 0-60 time of 10.3 seconds and gives a great combined fuel economy of 47.9 mpg which is excellent for this size of car.

The XC60 D5 is from the same design as the D5 engines in the rest of the range, but with a reworked turbo and internals to give a more powerful 205 bhp, with propels the car from 0 to 60 in 8.5 seconds – a couple of seconds faster than the D3 version and on to an increased top speed of 130 mph. fuel consumption is lower than the D3 with the D5 still returning 42.8 mpg on average, and is the more fun to drive as the extra 42 bhp gives it a more lively feel with extra go when overtaking. It’s also available as a manual or with the geartronic automatic transmission, which while it’s smooth does rob the car of some of its its instant response.

The T6 engine is a new motor recently introduced in the S80 model and is a turbocharged 6 cylinder 3.0 litre petrol engine with a mighty 281 bhp, which turns the car into more of a hot hatch performance car than an off roader. A rapid 0-60 of 7.5 seconds gives you an idea of the go under the bonnet, which means overtaking is fast and fun, although be prepared to brake early for the bends as you’re still in a big 4×4, not a sports car. It’s a great engine, and one that deserves more sales, but it is likely to be a rare sight in the UK due to the 23.5 mpg fuel economy, making the 2.4 diesel easily the biggest seller.

Volvo XC60 ES

The Volvo XC60 has 4 levels of trim, the ES, SE, R Design and SE Lux specifications. the D3 and D5 engines are available in all three, while the T6 has SE and SE Lux only. Starting with the ES Spec, you get all the usual Volvo safety aids and systems, electronic climate control, cruise control, leather steering wheel with remote audio controls, rear spoiler, roof rails,trip computer, brushed aluminium trim, Isofix seats, CD player with 6 speakers and an Aux-In socket for your MP3 player, 17” alloy wheels, and front fog lights.

The SE specification is the next up from the S and for about £1500 gives you hill descent control for serious off roading, auto dimming rear view mirror with compass built in, electric drivers seat with memory function, power folding door mirrors, rain sensing wipers, uprated driver info system, and to mark it our from the exterior – chrome trim round the windows.
