New Volvo XC90

We find the New Volvo XC90 is a truly versatile, stylish and practical 4x4, never really designed for serious off road use, but capable of transporting the family long distances in style and comfort. The car undercuts all of its rivals on cost and specification, the diesel has good fuel economy and great residual values, and is a wonderful place to be for either driver or passenger. A great overall package.

The XC90 makes practical transportation for the whole extended family. Front seats have plentiful head and leg room, with incredibly supportive, comfortable seats. The second row of three seats are equally well catered for, although the rearmost 2 seats are purely for children. These fold very simply into the floor when not in use to create what is a huge load area in the boot. With plenty of cubby holes and storage places, the car is packed with useful feature that do work very effectively. The car acquits itself admirably when corners arrive, in a manner which belies its overall size, with light and direct steering, and pliant suspension that allows little body roll but settles into a refined waft on the motorways, with surprisingly little in the way of road or wind noise. This is still a two tonne plus car with a high centre of gravity, but one that conducts itself in a way much more akin to a car than 4x4’s of old.

The XC90 has a choice of 2 powerful petrol engines, a 3.2 litre in line 6 cylinder and a 4.4 V8, both of which are Automatic only, and the popular D5 diesel model. For the performance minded, both of the petrol models do an admirable job, building speed rapidly, however, both return fairly low miles per gallon, and will have much poorer residual values than the diesel come resale time. The diesel cannot match either of the petrol units for pace, but does an admirable job on what is a very large car, and is easily the more financially sensible choice. In typical fashion, the Volvo feels wonderfully solid and well built. Materials are of high quality and surfaces and plastics are of the expensive soft feel kind. The engines and mechanicals are borrowed from the rest of the range, so will be proven and reliable, and switchgear feels robust, and able to withstand a lifetime of abuse.

Specification

The 2.4 D5 is the popular 5 cylinder diesel motor seen across the whole of the range. It is in its most powerful D5 guise, which has 185 bhp, enough to propel this large car from 0-60 mph in 10.9 seconds and on to 121 mph. The engine can feel a little coarse when really pushed, but it delivers a very respectable 34 mph on average, and is easily the best seller of the range. The diesel is available both in a manual and a geartronic auto version, with the auto being the popular choice.

3.2 Petrol

The XC90 3.2 petrol is an in line 6 cylinder engine, good for 238 horsepower and a top speed of 130 mph. 0-60 times are about the 9.5 second mark and the car feels responsive, even though it is only available with the geartronic automatic transmission. Using the engine it is smooth and refined, but like all petrol 4x4's it is the fuel economy that lets the side down, with a combined figure of 23.3 mpg.

Volvo XC90 Active

The XC90 has an array of different specifications to choose from, there's the entry level Active, then SE, SE Lux, R Design and Executive. Lets start with the Active, which gives you all the usual Volvo safety features, along with 17" alloy wheels, front fog lights, roof rails, rear par assist, load compensating suspension, and on the interior, electronic climate control, trip computer, exterior temperature gauge, cruise control, auto dimming rear view mirror, front and rear cup holders, leather steering wheel with audio controls, and a CD player with 8 speakers and an Aux-In socket for your MP3 player. All cars have 4 wheel drive and 7 seats.

Volvo XC90 SE

The SE specification takes what you get on the Active model and adds larger 18" alloy wheels, power folding door mirrors, rain sensing wipers, a compass to the rear view mirror, electric drivers seat with memory function, dark wood trim, and most importantly full leather seats.

Volvo XC90 SE Lux

The SE Lux specification takes the SE Spec further with extra additions of a different set of 18" alloys, active bending headlights with headlight washers, electric passenger seat with memory as well as the drivers seat, heated seats, a smarter set of instrument dials, 'sovereign hide' soft leather upholstery, and a set of floor mats.

Volvo XC90 Executive

The Executive spec is the most luxurious available on the XC90 and on top of the SE Lux features larger 19" alloy wheels, metallic paint free of charge, a unique grille and several items chromed, walnut wood trim and gear knob, executive ventilated soft leather upholstery with massage function, padded door armrests, the dynaudio premium sound system with a 6CD changer and 12 speakers, rear seat audio console with headphone sockets, RTI satellite navigation, GSM phone, Volvo's on call system and even a refrigerated console inside the front armrest to chill your champagne on the way home.

Volvo XC90 R Design

The R Design model took over from where the previous Sport left off as similar in spec to the SE but with a sportier look. With 19" alloy wheels, Active bending headlights, a lowered sports chassis with a faster steering rack, silver coloured door mirrors, extended colour coded wheel arches as part of a sports bodykit, stainless steel quad sports exhaust tailpipes, aluminium trim, R Design leather sports seats pedals and mats.

Colours available on the XC90 are: Black Sapphire, Silver, Ice White, Caper Green, Magic Blue, Oyster Grey, Savile Grey, Shadow Blue, Shimmer Gold, Ruby Red, Titanium Grey, Black Stone, and the Inscription Metallic Colours Electric Silver and Ember Black.
