Volkswagen offers an automatic gearbox only on selected engine sizes of the new Passat – you can have an auto box on the 1.4 TSI and the 2.0 TDI and 2.0 TSI, but not on the 1.6 diesel or the 1.8 petrol. All of the 2012 Volkswagen Passat Automatic models use the manufacturers DSG gearbox standing for “Direct Shift Gearbox”, it means it;s the latest twin clutch design that gives a much more seamless change than the old fashioned torque converter autos we used to see a few years ago, and it’s also much more fuel efficient, in some cases more efficient than the manual version. The DSG gearboxes cost around £1300 more than the equivalent manual version.
