Audi uses "Ultra" as its name for the most fuel efficient engines and models in the UK line up, in a very similar way to how Bluemotion is used for its sister company Volkswagen. The A4, A5 and A6 have had ultra engines added recently, and now it's the new A3's turn.
The new Audi A3 Ultra takes the popular 1.6 litre diesel engine and reduced it's CO2 emissions from 99g/km to 89g/km making it cheaper for company car users, and improves fuel economy to 83.1mpg on the official figures.
Several other tweaks are made in the name of efficiency - low rolling resistance tyres are added, and the lower sports suspension is standard. The space saver spare wheel is ditched due to weight saving, and there are some items on the options list for the standard car that can't be included on the Ultra version, such as the panoramic sunroof or the towing equipment - both because they would add weight to take the car over its CO2 threshold.
The Ultra SE and ultra SE Technik diesels replace the standard 1.6 TDI SE & SE Technik in the line up, while the sport and S Line versions are kept the same - their bigger alloys causing more rolling resistance and meaning they can't hit the CO2 target. Prices on the A3 Ultra are virtually identical to the outgoing models, only going up £40 over the previous cars.
