Renowned as one of the finest company cars available, the new 520d diesel is an elegant, powerful front wheel drive Saloon that also offers a sustainable and economical drive. With estimated fuel consumption as low as 47 mpg on the new more accurate WLTP test, and a punchy Turbo diesel engine, the 520d offers the best of both worlds. Not only does it have a smoothly refined and attractive exterior, but the 520d can run for almost 1,000 miles on a single tank of fuel, and the latest Mild Hybrid technology has just been added to this latest facelift version (hence the letters MHT in the description) which incorporates a 48 volt combines starter motor generator and a battery to store electrical power which can then be used to boost the cars performance at low revs when pulling away in traffic meaning less revs are needed to get going, which can save between 5 and 10% of fuel compared to a non-hybrid version, making the running costs extremely competitive, which is a key consideration for fleet vehicles.
The 2021 BMW 520d is also available in the spacious Touring estate body-styles, with a choice of either standard SE or M Sport trims. Optional extras such as adaptive damping and shift paddles on the steering wheel are tempting upgrades, while other must-haves such as Sat-Nav, twin-zone air conditioning and leather upholstery are included as standard. The SE trim even includes automatic cruise control and plush, high quality dashboard trim.
In terms of performance, the BMW 520d outshines other executive saloons in its class, as its dynamic four-cylinder diesel engine provides up to 190 bhp, can reach 60mph in just under eight seconds, and delivers torque of almost 300lb/ft above 1750rpm. The driving experience is more thrilling than you might expect, even given the relatively large size and comfortable interior. The BMW 520d has light, responsive steering, and the eight-speed ZF automatic engine gives drivers as much control as they desire.
The entry level price-tag of around £40,000 for the new 520d SE Saloon means that this model is slightly less affordable than the lighter 3 series equivalent, but there are so many refinements and improvements in this 5 Series model, it seems worth every penny of the additional cost.
