Audi's range of electric cars known as E tron is rapidly growing, starting with the Q7 based E-Tron 4x4, to the new smaller Q4 e tron SUV, now we have the top of the range flagship model - the E Tron GT saloon. Having the full might of the VAG group behind it, Audi has some serious talent to draw from, and what better place to share the technology with than the absolutely stunning Porsche Taycan, a car who has just won every motoring award going and is widely recognised as being the best electric car in the world by automotive journalists. In fact the only problem Audi has is competing directly with that car as the E-Tron GT is far in advance of anything else at this price range, including the Tesla Model S.
Audi showed a concept version of this car back in 2018 which wowed motor show audiences and it's great to see it hasn't changed a bit, keeping the concept's stunning good looks. The car is just under 5 metres long, with a lower roofline than it's petrol sibling the A7 model, and it features a twin electric motor set-up, with a 235 bhp electric motor at the front axle and a 429 bhp motor at the rear axle, though the full power of both motors is reserved and never deployed at once, with a maximum combined output of 469 bhp in normal use which is more than fast enough for most, with an overboost facility when launch control is activated (when you want to impress / scare passengers) that takes power up to 523bhp for 2.5 seconds for extra acceleration and a 0-60 time of just over 4 seconds, though with the lack of gears and 100% of torque available from zero revs it feels quicker than this in real life use, and top speed is limited to 152 mph.
The battery is mounted very low in the body for excellent handling, and is a large 93kWh unit (with a usable claimed amount of 85kWh) for long range driving with a predicted range of 303 miles, though expect this to drop significantly in cold weather or with hard use. The car can accept up to 11kWh home charging or with a public fast charger up to 270kW, and Audi UK has arranged a deal with the Ionity network for its own charging service.
The interior is typical high quality Audi design as you'd expect to see on an A8, Q7 etc with a 12.3" digital cockpit and a 10.1" central infotainment touchscreen, and a full range of options can be added in true Audi style to skyrocket the price of your lease further, with selections like the 710W Bang & Olufsen sound system or air suspension.
