Following the success of the Passat Alltrack model, Volkswagen have launched the tried and tested formula on the best selling Golf to give us the all new 2020 VW Golf Alltrack. It's based on the Golf estate model, and adds a bunch of features to give the car a more rugged look and a bit of off road ability.
All new Golf Alltrack models are offered with 4 wheel drive, which in normal road conditions sends all the power to the front wheels, but when the car detects the wheels starting to slip, sends up to 50% of the power to the rear wheels to aid drive. It's got a specialist off road mode built into the traction control system, as well as hill descent control the keeps the car at a steady speed when traversing rough terrain.
The Golf Alltrack has a raised ride height of 20mm over the standard Golf estate, which while useful isn't going to get you up the side of a mountain like a Land Rover will, so best thought of as useful for getting you up a rough farm track or across a muddy field rather than true off roading, but will give added peace of mind when the snow turns up.
The 2020 Alltrack also gets the looks to match the ability - grey plastic cladding around the wheel arches, roof rails and redesigned front and rear bumpers enhance the 4x4 appeal. The range of engines is mainly based around the current diesel offerings, so that will be the 1.6 TDI and 2.0 TDI units found across the VW line up, although a petrol engine may be added later. Other standard equipment includes climate control, LED reading lights, a touchscreen infotainment system & cruise control.
