So it's finally here, the one car that can be described as a proper "game changer", and that one day might take over from the Golf as one of the brands biggest global sellers - the all-electric Volkswagen ID.3, while we have seen expensive models from Tesla etc and smaller city cars like the Renault Zoe, the one car that fits well into every British person's life is the family hatchback and when it's offered on a global scale with billions of pounds investment you know it's going to be a big part of people’s lives as there simply isn't much else competition. Apple didn't invent the touchscreen phone, they simply did it so much better than everyone else and at an affordable price point, and that's what the ID.3 gives you - a fully electric car that's beautifully finished, in a range of power levels and battery ranges that will simply eliminate range anxiety for the majority of people and make electric cars mainstream.
So what exactly is on offer? well Volkswagen is expecting to sell big numbers of these but will ramp up production slowly, so the only model on sale initially from launch is called the ID.3 1st Edition, which is fully loaded with kit and has the mid-range battery option. That means a 58kWh battery (we are all going to have to get used to new ways of measuring range and performance and kWh as a measure of how much the battery stores will be a new defining measurement we will have to get used to understanding!) so 58kWh will give the car a range of around 260 miles, and we expect Volkswagen to offer a standard range battery for less money with 45kWh and a range of around 205 miles, and a long range battery with 77kWh which should give up to 340 miles. There will be two power levels in the ID3 line-up with different electric motors - a 110kW motor good for around 150 bhp and a 150kW motor good for around 200 bhp. We also expect a performance GTX model in the mould of the Golf GTI which will have 250-300 bhp equivalent but that might not be launched for a year or two. Spec levels after the 1St Edition should be a straightforward Standard, Plus or Max spec.
