We find the New XC90 2021 model is a truly versatile, stylish and practical 4x4, never really designed for serious off road use, but capable of transporting the family long distances in style and comfort. The car undercuts all of its rivals on for sale cost and specification, the diesel has good fuel economy and great residual values meaning monthly leasing prices are low and is a wonderful place to be for either driver or passenger. A great overall package.
The SUV makes practical transportation for the whole extended family. Front seats have plentiful head and leg room, with incredibly supportive, comfortable seats. The second row of three seats are equally well catered for, although the rearmost 2 seats are purely for children. These fold very simply into the floor when not in use to create what is a huge load area in the boot. With plenty of cubby holes and storage places, the car is packed with useful feature that do work very effectively. The car acquits itself admirably when corners arrive, in a manner which belies its overall size, with light and direct steering, and pliant suspension that allows little body roll but settles into a refined waft on the motorways, with surprisingly little in the way of road or wind noise. This is still a two tonne plus car with a high centre of gravity, but one that conducts itself in a way much more akin to a car than 4x4’s of old.
This latest generation of Volvo’s largest four-wheel drive SUV is a real crowd pleaser. With its efficient 4-cylinder powertrain engines, first-class cockpit design and integrated technology features, it not only provides excellent handling and performance, but also delivers outstanding comfort and safety for the occupants of all three rows of seats. Plus, the range also includes a super-economical plug-in hybrid version, labelled the T8, alongside the more traditional turbo-charged T6 petrol and D5 diesel models.
Each of the 2.0 Litre engines in the XC90 range has been selected to provide maximum performance and agility, and combine with an eight-speed automatic transmission for enhanced efficiency. As with the previous edition, the new Volvo XC90 contains seven comfortable adult sized seats, upholstered in high quality leather, with even more flexibility and adjustment options than before. For additional comfort, the car includes optional four-zone air conditioning, allowing the temperature and ambient conditions of each corner of the car to be individually controlled.
The Volvo XC90 comes in a choice of three design trims, the entry level Momentum spec, sporty R-Design spec and luxurious Inscription spec. Each trim comes with its own selection of high quality features, upholstery and technology. The hybrid T8 version also brings its own unique design touches, for added premium to match the model’s flagship status, such as a powered panoramic sunroof and Orrefors Crystal gear lever knob.
In line with Volvo’s admirable goal of completely reducing the number of fatal accidents in new Volvo cars by 2020, the new XC90 contains an impressive array of safety features and equipment. For starters, the Safe Positioning system detects sudden sideways movements, and automatically tightens passenger seatbelts to protect occupants from spinal injuries in the event of the car veering off the road. The model also includes Volvo’s City Safe emergency braking technology, pre-crash protection for rear impacts, Roll Stability Control and more. Thanks to the set of cameras mounted in strategic positions around the car, the XC90 offers 360-Surround View, to reduce collisions while in traffic and when parking.
To sum up, if you’re looking for a car that will keep you and your family safe while traveling and stationary, the Volvo XC90 is hard to fault. The XC90 may be one of the safest cars on today’s roads, but that doesn’t mean it’s dull to drive. On the contrary: the most powerful engine, the flagship T8 Twin Engine Hybrid, produces an impressive 400 horsepower, with the 320hp petrol and 80hp electric engines combined. This seven-seater SUV can shift from 0 to 60mph in around 5.6 seconds, and reach top speeds of up to 140mph. With excellent handling and traction control from the four-wheel drive system, and high ground clearance, the XC90 offers a thrilling experience, and feels secure even around tight bends and over rough surfaces.
Volvo has pitched the XC90 2021 model in well below equivalent premium car from the German manufacturers in the form of the Audi Q7, the BMW X5 and the Mercedes GLE 4x4, and it provides a genuinely different and more comfortable experience than either.
