Following the push for manufacturers to lower their average fleet CO2 levels, the move away from diesel and customers ever increasing demands for better fuel economy, and combine all that with city centre clean air zones, Hybrid models are appearing faster than ever before. BMW has capitalised on this with its new X1 Hybrid, known as the 25e it features a turbocharged 1.5 litre 3 cylinder engine seen in both the Mini and the BMW i8 sports car and in this iteration giving 123 horsepower, mated to an electric motor that provides a further 94 horsepower for a combined 217bhp when both are used for maximum acceleration. The Petrol engine powers the front wheels and the electric motor the rears, so the car has a true 4 wheel drive system and so picks up BMW's xDrive name.
The 25e has a 9.7kWh battery which gives the car an electric only range of around 35 miles and runs at speeds up to 84 mph before the petrol engine kicks in, depending on how hard you mash the throttle. the X1 is a plug in hybrid, so can be recharged at home overnight, so if you do mainly commutes of 15 miles or s each way every day in traffic and occasional longer journeys then this could be a great car for you - ideal for the school run too. If however you do mainly motorway mileages at higher speed you're unlikely to see the benefits so a diesel model would better serve you.
