Editorial view:

BMW has introduced its first hybrid into the X3 line up with the addition of the new 30e model which combines the 2.0 litre petrol engine seen in the 20i with an electric motor fitted inside the front of the 8 speed automatic gearbox that can produce 107 bhp on its own, to give a combined output when both motors are used in tandem of 288bh and 310lb/ft of torque that gives full bore acceleration feeling a lot more rapid than the 2.0 petrol model does on its own, saving a full 2 seconds of the 0-60 time taking it down to 6.1 seconds and a top speed of 131mph. The battery powering this sits under the rear luggage compartment and while it takes up 50 litres of space it doesn't impact the luggage capacity significantly. The X3 30e will run in electric only mode at up to 84 mph and gives you an electric range of around 30-35 miles after which the petrol engine kicks in, and it will also use the petrol if you ask for lots of acceleration from heavy use of your right foot. This petrol hybrid would suit those doing mainly shorter runs such as daily commuting with occasional longer runs, as the petrol engine on its own isn't particularly efficient, so those doing higher mileages may still be better off looking at the cheaper X3 20d diesel. But if you have the ability to recharge the car on a night from home and your use of the car fits the profile then there are very few downsides of the hybrid compared to the petrol versions, and could save you significantly on fuel costs. The X3 30e is pitched directly against other German rivals such as the Audi Q5 50 TFSIe and the Mercedes GLC Hybrid, and the monthly leasing price is pitched only slightly more than the petrol and diesel versions of the X3.
