If you want to up your power levels still further then paying BMW just shy of £3,000 extra on top of the 30d price will get you the new X5 40d model, based around the same 3.0 litre diesel engine but with a higher output from the turbo taking the power from 265 bhp to 340 bhp, which will knock around a second from the 0-60 time to 5.5 seconds, with official fuel economy and CO2 figures looking good at around 38mpg (better than the less powerful 30d) as the car is now fitted with a mild hybrid energy recouperation system that through a small 48V combined starter motor generator gives the car an extra boost. The extra torque is immediately noticeable taking the car from a solid cruiser to feeling pretty rapid, and you'll get about half of the extra outlay back in an improved resale value in 3 yrs time, so in our view it's worth the extra if you can afford it.
