The new X5 Hybrid, known as the 45e iPerformance model takes over from the previous first attempt at a hybrid called the 40e, and it's clear to see that the technology has moved on significantly, being much more fuel efficient, recuperating energy more effectively, and transitioning between electric and petrol models much more smoothly. the 45e Hybrid incorporates a 282bhp turbocharged six-cylinder 3.0-litre motor that also powers the 745e. combined with a 113bhp electric motor, it gives a total of 389 bhp when both motors run in tandem, and has a vastly improved battery size of 24kWh (up from 9.2kWh on the previous generation,)which allows running either in electric only mode for up to 54 miles and up to 75mph, petrol only at higher speed, or a combination of both for maximum performance. As a plug in model you can recharge overnight and if your journeys consist mainly of shorter trips around town combined with the occasional longer journey then the X5 hybrid 45e could be the perfect car for you. 0-60 times are around 5.6 seconds so it feel rapid, similar to that of the 40d, and CO2 ratings are just 41g/km so it'll save you a fortune on company car tax.
