Jeep is stretching its environmental credentials with a new range of Hybrid engine options for its line-up of cars and SUV's, and the 2021 Compass will benefit from this with the all new Compass 4xe Hybrid. It features a 1.3 litre turbocharged petrol engine driving the front wheels combined with a 59bhp electric motor powering the rear wheels and large capacity battery, allowing either rapid acceleration off the line if both the petrol engine and electric motor are used in tandem with a total 187 bhp in the Limited spec, or if you opt for the more expensive Trailhawk or S spec the petrol motor is boosted further to give a combined 237 bhp. It will also run in electric only mode for up to 29 miles, switching off the petrol engine entirely when in traffic and at lower speeds, switching to the petrol engine only at higher speeds and longer runs.
Most Hybrid cars function in one of two ways – either as a “Mild” version which has a smaller battery and recharged energy from the engine, and recoups it during deceleration and braking, to supplement power to the car at lower speeds and save you maybe 5-10% in fuel economy, or the more advanced but usually more expensive “plug-in” option which charges up either from a home charger or a more powerful public charger, and allows the car to run in electric only mode at lower speeds and smaller throttle openings – ranges are typically around 30-35 miles of electric only running but this is improving all the time from better battery technology, perfect for around town and general commuting, though if you’re doing mainly longer runs at high speeds then you’re effectively just carrying around a heavy battery and extra electric motor for nothing and not seeing the benefits, so something like a diesel may still be a better choice for you in that situation. Most plug-in hybrid models come with an automatic gearbox as standard to optimise fuel efficiency, and are several thousand pounds more on the list price than their standard petrol versions but due to the enhanced resale values are typically only a few pounds a month more on the leasing price - so it’s well worth comparing how much you would saving in fuel costs, for example if the car is £40 a month more to lease but will save you £200 a month in petrol it’s a no brainer to choose one.
With the Compass 4xe, the large battery gives an electric only range of around 29 miles depending on speed, and is a plug-in hybrid model so you can charge it up overnight and have incredibly cheap commuting daily, with the petrol engine kicking in for longer runs. The Compass Hybrid will suit those who have home charging facilities (and remember to use them!) and those who do a low speed commute every day of maybe 10-15 miles sat in traffic and occasional longer journeys. If you mainly use the car for long distances and regular faster motorway work then the diesel will probably work out better for you.
