Land rover has followed the global trend for electrification with the launch of the all new Discovery Sport Hybrid model, called the 300e, it uses a 1.5 litre 3 cylinder petrol engine (effectively the same as the 2.0 Ingenium petrol but with a cylinder lopped off the end) that gives 197 bhp on its own that drives the front wheels only, and then at the rear there is a separate electric motor that has a power of 107 bhp, together with a 15kWh battery. When the motors both run in tandem they get a combined 300 horsepower, giving a rapid 0-60 time of just 6.1 seconds. More importantly is the electric only range on that large battery which is up to 38 miles on the new WLTP official figures with CO2 down to 36g/km, and the car will run on electric power alone at speeds of up to 84 mph, with the petrol engine kicking in at higher speeds or bigger throttle openings when more acceleration is needed. If your daily routine consists of mainly shorter commutes of 15-20 miles each way or less plus the occasional longer journey, and you have the facility to recharge at home overnight then the new Discovery Sport Hybrid could be perfect for you and save you a fortune in fuel bills, and the low CO2 means company car tax will be very cheap for business users. If however your journeys mainly consist of long runs at high speeds and lots of motorway stuff, then the diesel will probably still be the better option.
