Fuel & Gearbox
Europe has put some incredibly tough emissions targets for car manufacturers which start from 2021 and this combined with factors like the London congestion charge has prompted Mercedes to increase the number of hybrids in its range. first seen in the A Class the tech has moves to the B Class the CLA and GLA SUV. Called the GLA 250e it uses the popular 1.3 litre turbocharged petrol engine found in the 200 and adds an electric motor that produces another 101 horsepower, totalling 215 horsepower and 332 lb/ft or torque when both run together. A 15.6kWh battery gives an electric only range of around 30-35 miles depending on temperature and driving style, and when both motors are running in tandem then a 0-60 time of just 6.6 seconds makes the GLA feel very quick, whilst giving you vastly improved fuel economy. If you have the facility to plug in the car at home overnight to charge it (and will remember to!) and have a commute of 10-15 miles a day each way, and do the occasional longer journey then this could be a great choice and save considerably on fuel bills. If you do mainly long motorway journeys, then the diesel will probably be a better choice.
