As Mercedes-Benz looks to reduce its overall emissions and produce more environmentally friendly cars, more models like the new GLC hybrid are being introduced. Using the same tech as seen in the new C-Class, the new GLC 300e Hybrid uses the same 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 210 bhp combined with a 121 bhp electric motor built into the gearbox to give an overall 315 horsepower and shove the car from 0-60 in just 5.7 seconds and onto a top speed of 143 mph. The GLC Hybrid has a substantial 13.5kWh battery which will allow electric only running for around 25 miles and an electric only top speed of 81 mph and can be recharged at home overnight giving you very cheap motoring, and very low CO2 figures of just 51 g/km. A hybrid does need to fit into your life for it to be worthwhile, so you need the home charge ability (this GLC doesn't have a fast charge system fitted, so home charging at 7kW is about as fast as it will go) and you need to be doing mainly low speed commutes sat in traffic (which does sound like a lot of us) and occasional longer journeys to make the most of the set up. If you're doing mainly long journeys at motorway speeds it isn't going to be as worthwhile and the diesel engine models would probably be a better bet.
