With BMW rapidly increasing its development of hybrid technology, it's no surprise that it filters to Mini, so the tech that underpins the 225xe has been adapted to fit the Countryman. It's a combination of an 87 bhp electric motor driving the rear axle powered by a 9.6kWh battery plus the 1.5 litre petrol engine as seen in the Cooper, so it's 4 wheel drive and gets the ALL4 name. When working in tandem for full bore acceleration these give 224 horsepower, enough for a 0-60 time of just 6.8 seconds and a top speed of 123 mph.
More importantly the Countryman hybrid is capable of electric only running for a range of up to 28 miles depending on how you push it and how cold it is, then it will fall back to the petrol engine for longer runs and higher speeds. This means if you have a regular school run or commute of about 10-15 miles each way and have the ability to recharge the battery at home on a night (and you remember to do it!) then this could be a very efficient car for you, saving a significant amount of fuel. for those doing mainly motorway miles at higher speeds however will not see much of a saving.
