With previous generations of the 911 you could easily tell which was the Carrera 2 and which was the Carrera 4 and 4S by the width - the 4's would have a wider rear end with more curvaceous haunches, however on this latest generation 911 model both the 2 and the 4 share exactly the same bodywork, so visually you just have to go on the badge! The number refers to the number of driven wheels ie the Carrera 2 is rear wheel drive and the 4 and 4S are four wheel drive as standard and cost a little more because of this, but they do give a traction advantage so when you're pulling away at a junction or a wet roundabout you don’t spin those rear wheels, and when putting the power down you are far less likely to spin the car accidentally. The 4S can also cope with poor weather conditions a little better although it's far from an ideal car for the snow, and would benefit strongly from winter tyres is you're using it in inclement conditions.
The Standard 911 Carrera 4 gives you 385 bhp from its 3.0 litre 6 cylinder engine, but pay an extra £5000 and you get the 4S model with a big horsepower bump up to 450 bhp which you really feel, especially with the stronger mid-range torque. The 4S also benefits from a big chunk of extra standard equipment thrown in, and when you look at the monthly leasing price they aren’t that different.
